Things to see and do while backpacking in England.

Check out tips from other travellers and bloggers and their experiences in England.

If you're already planning to visit England - scroll to the next section for a list of the best places to stay.

Social Anxiety and Depression

I was diagnosed with social anxiety issues about 18 months ago, and for the first few months I was dealing with it really quite well. My first month or so of travelling was really difficult. Being thrown into crazy situations that a lone 18 year old girl who’s never left England has no effing clue how to deal with.

Daisy Mullins

Sports events

One of Wellington’s main venues, the Westpac Stadium, hosts many sporting events throughout the year. Back in February I managed to see my first ever live game of cricket as we arrived the same week as England played Sri Lanka in the World Cup. I have also seen Aussie Rules football, catching the ANZAC Day game there and have watched several rugby games there as well. It’s really easy to get to from the city centre and is located just a few minutes walk from the train and bus station.

Understanding Bristol

Bristol is England’s sixth biggest city and the heartbeat of the beautiful English West Country. You’ll find the Bristolian people open-minded, hospitable and heart-warming. Bristol’s prosperity is strongly related to Britain’s early sea-faring days and was the base for New World exploration. Therefore, there are many well preserved and inspiring historical sites dotted around the city. Modern day Bristol is a beautiful mishmash of the world’s cultures and its historical and modern arts scenes are prolific. Bristol is one of the UK’s most popular tourist destinations and was selected in 2009 as one of the world’s top-ten cities. Sounds expensive? Sure, there are plenty of ways to burn a hole in your wallet, but here’s a few of my favourites freebies that won’t.

Why to do an exchange in Brighton & Hove

Brighton & Hove is a lovely city located on the southern cost, about one hour from London. Also known as “London by the Sea” this city is one of the most famous seaside resorts in England and very sought after by international students to take language courses over the summer period.

Perth

A lovely clean, welcoming and sunny (if very windy) city that has a lot to offer and is a great gateway for day trips to Rottnest Island and Freemantle. My decision to start off my year in Perth was an easy one as it cost less money for me to fly there from England and then fly to Melbourne, than it did to fly straight to Melbourne so I thought why not check it out on route! There’s plenty to do to keep you busy from Kings Park (great for a day out, get a picnic going!), the zoo, aquarium, some nice art galleries and museums and a decent shopping scene with bars and restaurants to rest your tired feet and lay down your recent buys.

Hippies and Holsteins: Four Seasons in Vermont

Vermont is a small state (3.5 hours driving North-South and 1.5 East-West) in the crammed region of New England in the Northeastern part of the US. It is known for many things, from Burton snowboards and Ben & Jerry’s Ice cream to ski slopes and picturesque fall foliage. You can also find just as many hippies as Holstein cows.

Is three days enough in this crazy city?

We arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport (Bangkok airport) from England at around 7am local time. Everybody left the plane, eager to get their bags and set out on their onward travel but were faced with a queue of around 100 people at border control. We stood patiently, waiting for the Thai border force to allow us through, they were awfully slow. Once we received our 30 day visitor’s visa we ran to our baggage claim, so worried our backpacks weren’t going to appear, they did, thankfully. We walked into the arrivals hall, eyes peeled for our airport pickup. We had booked a tour for our first week in Thailand and they were here to collect and take us to our guesthouse. The tour company we used was Thaintro and I’m so glad we used them because they not only give you an introduction to Thailand but an introduction to Backpacking in general. Our group leader Liam, had organised a taxi to take us back to our guesthouse, he rode with us and got us checked into the Wild Orchid Villa. Naturally, Alex and I crashed out until around 2pm, we had pretty much been awake all night on our flights from London to Dubai and Dubai to Bangkok. We booked our flights with Gapyear.com, it was ever so simple, all done over the phone in a matter of minutes.

England: Not just London

As London is home to some of the most frequented airports (and thus, cheapest) for European travel, many euro-trippers make London their first stop at the beginning of their adventure or their last stop on the journey home. Don’t get me wrong, London is beautiful, full of amazing history, and home to some of the best music and art scenes in Europe. Don’t skip London! That being said, don’t stop at London! Bare the cold and cover as much of England as you can. My time in England was spent with friends, just exploring the country. I don’t have much advice as to what touristy spots are worth a visit in England, but I can assure you these listed areas are most than exciting enough places to hang out for a couple of days!

Haley Brown

Jamaica: The secret Third-World Country

In January 2014, I embarked on an adventure with my sister to Jamaica, I had no idea what I was getting into and it was shock to the senses when I finally did arrive. I touched down in Kingston on a hot January afternoon; I had waited for three months, with anticipation, to finally see my family’s home country and I was excited to meet people that I wouldn’t necessarily associate with in England and to understand the culture of my ancestors. I had done my research into Jamaica before heading there, talked to a family friend who had been there several times and I was in high spirits, eager to get stuck into a country that I had never been before. I remember the drive from the airport to where we were staying and I also remember, vividly, the look of horror that passed between my sister and I as it finally dawned on us that Jamaica wasn’t the tropical paradise that we had, so foolishly, envisioned.

A local

If you’re in England and visiting London there is an incredible amount of things to do and see and places to go, such a vast city has a lot to offer, and although I do recommend checking out the obvious places, it is easy to miss the essence of London when following the tourist trail. Buckingham Palace, Oxford Street, Big Ben, the London Eye etc. are all entertaining and interesting in their own right, but London is so much more than a selection of attractions, even if they are very nice attractions.

lily-guy-vogel

Is travelling really safe?

Well, if I had spent the last four months at home in England the most unsafe thing I would have done would have been to get in my car and drive to work.  However, the last four months I have been travelling in India and SE Asia. I´ve walked with wild elephants, swam in shark ridden seas, fallen off a motorbike, gone white water rafting, been driven at high speeds by people who should never be allowed a licence (and probably didn’t have one) and got tattoos and piercings! Yes you do things travelling that you would never do at home but that´s what makes it the incredible adventure it is!
