Where to Eat

Auckland. Has. The. Best. Food. Between the fresh local produce, excellent coffee, heavy Asian influence, and eclectic fusion fare, you will not go hungry in Auckland, but you will pay for it. It is worth the splurge every now and again. Ponsonby Central– this little shopping center, located smack in the middle of Ponsonby Road, is home to some of the best restaurants in Auckland. Notably, The Blue Breeze Inn, two words: pork buns. Also, Dante’s Pizzeria: authentic Italian wood-fired pizzas that melt in your mouth. Auckland Central- any Japanese or Korean restaurant you go to in the CBD will blow your mind. I have had some of the best sushi and ramen ever in some little hole-in-the-wall spots found here. Cafe Hanoi– Vietnamese fusion. The rice krispy shrimp will change your world. The Bamboo Basket– traditional Vietnamese banh mi made with love by the nicest people you will ever meet. Sal’s Pizza– classic New York pizza. Literally, all the ingredients are flown in. Drooling. Cafe Melba– excellent coffee and breakfast here. Try the smashed avocado and feta with smoked salmon and poached egg. Enough said. Where to Drink Auckland is not really a party city. If you are looking for one, head to Queenstown. Having said that, there are a few bars worth checking out.

What to do in the snow?

Funnily enough, some of the best options are indoors. Sitting in a small cafe with a warm Cappuccino warming up your numb fingers is always good. But it is so much better when you can watch people pass outside the window, sliding on the pavement looking like they wish they were also in that cafe. Sounds a bit mean now that I think about it, but I’m sure you all know the feeling. For a really good experience, check out the New York Cafe, which is part of the Boscolo Hotel here in Budapest. I have been a few times, and everything about the place can only be described as “crazy elegant”! The cakes and treats are delicious and look amazing and the interior alone makes just being there an experience in itself. It sounds a bit crazy, but have a look at some photos of the New York Cafe’s interior and you will understand what I mean. Another option which is semi-indoors is the Buda Eye. You will have to find out if it is operating for when you are here, but it provides a great view and will give you 10 minutes to warm up your fingers a bit before continuing on your day’s journey.

Summer:

Everyone comes out of the woodwork during summer to try and maximize this brief season. Outdoors activities are extremely popular in Vermont, so it is worth it to get out there and enjoy nature like a local. You can visit the largest city, Burlington, which sits on the edge of Lake Champlain. The view is stunning, with the shadows of the Adirondack Mountains of New York on the horizon and the glimmering narrow slip of water between. There are a few sandy beaches to enjoy, but most are made of smooth, white-ringed rocks. Don’t expect a tropical paradise here, but more of a blue-brown sensation that is perfect for taking the edge off a hot and humid day. Nothing is better than hiking for hours through the woods, then topping the experience with a swim in the lake or a hidden waterfall. Vermont is rife with cascades and you can Google or ask locals to find the best spots. Some, like Triple Buckets in Bristol or Huntington Gorge in Huntington are popular with cliff jumpers and those who like a little more excitement in their aquatic experience. Be aware of strong river currents though, because it is quite common every year to hear about a drowning.
