THE TOP 20 MOST SPECTACULAR PLACES TO WATCH SUNSETS IN THE CANARY ISLANDS

Canary Islands is made up of seven islands, geographically closer to Africa that of Spain. However, the climate of the islands is completely different to that of the rest of Spain. Is conditioned by the trade winds and the azores high, the proximity of the islands to the African Coast (which makes it possible for the arrival of wind very warm and dry from the Sahara) and the relief of the same. All these factors make the islands have a tropical climate, with an average of 22º throughout the year. It is scientifically proven that the weather has a very strong influence on the emotions; feel the rays of the sun on the skin, breathe the pure breeze from the sea, play with the sand between the toes or contemplate a sunset, are moments that we Full of vitality and happiness.

Sights, sounds and smells of San Isidro 2016 Madrid’s top festival for their patron saint! Spain is known for its fiestas and San Isidro festival is celebrated each year across the city of Madrid, on the weekend closest to the 15th of May. Madrilenos celebrate San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers as well as Madrid, by dressing in traditional attire, and taking to the streets all across the city for parades, performances, fireworks, music and so much more. If you’re heading to San Isidro, the life of the party is at La Pradera de San Isidro, a park to the South West of the city centre, however just about every Barrio in Madrid has events to celebrate.

Back to the Future in Alcala

Small enough to visit all in one day, great enough to leave the impression that inhabitants are proud of its full glory. Town Alcala de Henares, one of the oldest cities in Spain is located on the river Henares, 35 kilometers northeast of the city of Madrid, historical center is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. Urban area stands out for its civic duty to pronounce who was born here, since as the author of timeless novel said “Every man is as Heaven made him, and sometimes a great deal worse.” Miguel de Cervantes spent there 4 years before his family moved to Valladolid, which was not their final destination. With some beliefs, souls even unconsciously are choosing their place before birth, according to that, it is easy to say Alcalá is a town with interesting, poetic soul. Anyway more prosaically reason to claim that, is the experience of architecture bearing traces of Roman and Muslim culture, traditions, monuments and even something what is always alive – nature. Eventually man creates the culture, then culture creates the man, in sociology science is well known as phenomenon of acculturation. On top of that aesthetic impression of this area is worth to see especially when You are nearby Madrid.

The search for tapas in Avilés

Throughout our road trip in Asturias we found some places that were like this, so it’s a good idea to check the menu or reviews before you go to an Asturian restaurant! I also felt the concept of tapas is quite different than in Catalunya. In Asturias you can get a whole plate of food and it could still be called tapas! But as you will find out, Asturias is very different from the rest of Spain in many ways.

Conclusions about whether or not getting a TEFL certificate is worth it

I don’t regret paying the money and doing the course. I had absolutely no experience teaching English before moving to Spain to do it, and the course at least gave me the confidence to start doing it. I had spent so many hours doing all the assignments and readings that I felt I had real life experience or at least that I had some worth as a teacher. However, considering my teaching experience comes from private classes, the course did very little to help me understand how to prepare a class for one person. The course is very focused on giving lessons to a class of students, and preparing lessons for a class is actually easier than preparing for one student. In a class the students can entertain each other. They can play games with each other, do activities and especially talk to each other in English. In private lessons, it’s just you and the student for an hour or an hour and a half so it’s up to you to fill ALL that time which requires quite different planning than the planning required for classes.

A trip to the small sister of Ibiza - Formentera

When you compare the Formentera island to the other three big islands in the Balearic sea, Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza, All in Spain, you think that there is something wrong with it, as it is not offering the visitors the lifestyle that the other three islands are. And you think that it can do a lot better than this, provide with parties, events and craziness like the other islands are doing. All it could offer was a place to sit and have a relaxing and not so cheap meal, lay down on the beaches and enjoy with little to no music on them, or rent a bike and do a tour around the island – what most of the visitors used to do there. But that’s exactly what was needed from the island.

Gaudi is everywhere

Going in the downtown direction along the Passeig de Gracia, we continued our acquaintance with Gaudi: the waves-facade as if carved out of stone is La Pedrera’s feature (also called Casa Mila); the balconies in the form of carnival masks and varicolored mosaic distinguishe Casa Batllo. Next door to it there are not less beautiful in their architecture Casa Ametller, Casa Lleó Morera, and Casa Bonaventura Ferrer among many other gorgeous sights manifesting the beauty of Spanish mix of baroque, Art Nouveau, and modernism. Another peculiar feature of Passeig de Gracia are decorative forged street lamps also designed by Gaudi. Walking under the bending-down metal lianas is a truly romantic thing when the lights are on at night. Passeig de Gracia is also remarkably known for expensive shopping at world fashion brand boutiques and stores, staying in the most luxurious and status hotels in Spain, eating in great gourmet restaurants. Walking there gets you to soak the atmosphere of chic and art. The final point of the marvelous architecture in the Passeig is Casa Rocamora with orange glossy tiled roof and then we reached the Catalunya Square with its fresh air of the fountains, shade from the trees, beautiful lawn and flowerbeds. A couple of minutes enjoying the city hustle and bustle in addition to the pigeons feeding – these birdies are the local attraction and a fun thing –  are followed by the main tourist street in Barcelona, La Rambla!

Shopping

Shopping in Granada can be tricky when looking for quality. There are so many bazaars and market looking shops as you walking down the Albaicin. They are filled with beautiful lanterns, hookahs, scarves and candles. While this is all very nice, it really depends on what you are looking for. It is not made in Spain and you could find the same in Morocco when you go. Granada is a city of great artesian craft, you just have to know where to look.

Nightlife

I remember the night we went out in the city we stood in the line boy and girl next to each other, and when we went out in Sitges (47km away from the center) the bartender went out on the street and yelled that we came in. Very different but both great experiences. The most fun for me was definitely dancing. I love dancing, and Spain is all about the hips. Even if you just watch them do it, you just kind of sink in and feel their rhythm. And I am not talking just about girls, boys dance just as well there. It’s really their style and it’s amazing. With their music, of course, it’s almost impossible not to move when you hear Enrique Inglesias or Despacito.

Girona: why this city is a must-see

If I say “Catalonia”, which city will come to your mind? “Barcelona” is the answer that most of the people would say. However, I am going to introduce you another city, not far from Barcelona, although. Girona is also one of the most important cities in Catalonia. Located in the north-east of Spain, this city has increased its popularity during the last year. Why? A big part of the sixth season of Game of Thrones has been recorded here. Before this happened, there weren’t many tourists in the city. Since then, you can easily be stopped by a tourist asking you “where is the cathedral of Game of Thrones”. This event has had a huge impact in the city. However, Girona is more than Game of Thrones. Let me show you why.

Almeria: paradise of beaches and coves

In the south-east of Spain, this place is not the most touristic destination of the country, but it is worth a trip here. I remember when I left home, I was 18 and I was prepared to start the University and a new life in Madrid. I believe that all those who have left their hometowns know not only the feeling of uncertainty in the farewell but also know that when you come back after a long time, you don’t see the place with the same eyes.

Sunscreen

Another small thing I didn’t consider before getting on the plane to Barcelona was sunscreen. In Spain sunscreen can be very very expensive, sometimes two or three times as much as you see in the U.S., and it rarely comes in bottles of less than 100 mL that are approved to carry on in Europe. A day in the sun is fun but not if the next two weeks you have to pay for it with a sunburn or you have to drip twenty euros on sunscreen. Be prepared and dole out enough sunscreen into little 100 mL bottles before you leave and you’ll save a lot of trouble when you get to Barcelona.

SERENDIPITY

A pleasant feeling of freedom is everywhere around. Mornings are calm and far from the noisy daybreaks those who live in vibrant cities are used to. Temperatures are quite high when the sky is clear and warm when it’s cloudy – but you must not get fooled as the daylight is enough for you to get a sunburn, or at least it was for me! Sun kissed skin locals mix perfectly with the influx of tourists, which was surprisingly quite high. This little isle in Spain has definitely loads to offer as even the smallest museum on earth is located here! Tourists can get to know more about the place’s flora, fauna and primary sectors of the local economy from Monday to Saturday from 10ººh to 17ººh.

                            Siestas, Sunshine and Tapas

In September 2015, I packed all my bags, got on a plane and took a leap of faith.  I was off to start my new life in Madrid and I was nervous, scared and excited.  The previous year I was teaching middle school in Boston, in a job I loved (kids) and hated (conniving coworkers, difficult bosses and long work hours). I had nothing to lose.  So I accepted a teaching position and accepted an admittance to a masters program in teaching bilingual education.  I could not wait to see what Madrid, Spain had in store.

Lets talk about the culture/spanish people for a minute..

Contrary to many misconceptions about the Spanish, they are in fact, genuinely a nice bunch. Out of all the times I’ve visited Spain, I never really had an unpleasant encounter with the Spanish. Although I roughly speak the language (Portuguese is understood well by the Spanish), and even though it is not at all perfect, I feel like they actually appreciate the effort you make into trying your best to communicate with them. Whenever I went into a coffee shop or local bar, I was always kindly greeted by a simply ‘Hola’ or ‘Buenos Dias’ , that really helps you feel less like an oddball. One thing that I also noticed is that contrary to more southern cities in Spain like Gibraltar, Marbella, etc, most of the people form Seville don’t talk English to you, not because they don’t want to, it’s purely because most of them really can’t speak the language, either they haven’t learnt it in school, as in some areas it is not common to teach english through out the whole schooling years. Its very important to familiarise yourself with the very basic greetings in Spanish. This way they will see you are putting an effort to make yourself understood.

1. Take a Tour Through the Historic Center

From there you can walk for five minutes to visit the museum of Fernando Botero (I will talk about it later on this article), and after that you would be just a block away from La Plaza de Bolivar. In this plaza you will find one of the most important cathedrals of the city, the national Justice Palace, the congress building, the mayor’s office, and the 2oth of July (Colombian independence day) museum house. This plaza is consider the heart of Bogota where major historical event have taken place, like the beginning of the Colombian Independence from Spain in 1810, the huge protest in 1941 for the assassination of the political leader Jorge Eliecer Gaitan which started the famous chaos around the city called “Bogotazo”, and the tragedy that occurred when members of the guerrilla group M-19 took control of the Justice Palace for two days in 1985 in an unsuccessful attempt to take control of the government.

Route recommendation

If you are going by plane, my advice is to land in Málaga and start your journey from there. Once you arrive to Andalusia, you can arrange bus to drive you from city to city (in order to not waste time going by yourself). There are numerous bus agencies to check. Company I was travelling with is called “VIAJES EUROAMERICA” and I was satisfied. Train tickets are expensive, so most of the population in Spain prefers bus while travelling.
