Things to see and do while backpacking in Croatia.

Check out tips from other travellers and bloggers and their experiences in Croatia.

If you're already planning to visit Croatia - scroll to the next section for a list of the best places to stay.

Gornji grad

Zagreb is the capital city of Croatia and it’s rich history is best shown in Gornji Grad (lit. Upper town). It is perfect for wandering around aimlessly, whereas getting lost only leads you to new, exciting findings.  Impressive churches and dazzling old palaces give your imagination free reign and adorable galleries and museums enlighten you in a special way. The most interesting museum, is the Museum of Broken Relationships. It offers you a chance for closure and freedom : by donating your personal items, that were once a part of your past love. Another recommendation is the pub Tolkien’s House, for a cosy afternoon or a merry evening.

Valerija Vukosavljevic

A reason to visit

As I stood under a tree at dusk waiting to cross Obala Street, I couldn’t help but notice the noise. There was chirping, beeping, and what I am certain was the sound of pecking, but it was the clucking that stood out. I was returning from dinner at Metropole Casino-yes if you are a fan of Las Vegas, then the region is proud to welcome you to one of it’s many Vegas style Casinos, that stretches all the way from Koper to Buje in Croatia- where I enjoyed the fish of the day, even though I was craving chicken. And Like that, a bell that usually accompanies an imaginary light bulb that goes on over someones head when a brilliant idea comes, tolled in mine. It was chicken, or rather chickens that were busy clucking overhead in the twilight. But how can that be? Can chickens climb trees? Do chickens climb trees? It was at that moment I dismissed the task of spending the evening trolling for wives. To be clear, I had planned on spending the evening at various trendy spots along Obala looking for single women. To be precise, one unmarried young woman to marry, yes my father was dead serious.  Instead I would spend the evening trying to answer the question; Can chickens fly?

Christmas market

Zagreb, as a capital city of Croatia, is the most populated one and during the winter most visited one thanks to the Christmas market. This year Christmas market in Zagreb was elected as the best one in whole Europe by Europian Best Destinations. This was a major victory because everyone wanted to come and see it and they were not let down. If you want to visit Zagreb, and you should, try coming during December just so you could enjoy the Christmas market and it’s wonders. On the main square called Trg bana Josipa Jela?i?a there’s many decorations and little wooden stands where people are making hot dogs and fritters, cooking wine and more. A lot of different smells from making so many delicious things are in the air and you just feel like you want to eat everything they are offering but you remember your diet and you…well you forget about it in the second and buy those fritters with Nutella on them and eat it with no regrets! All of the lights, fake snow and Christmas trees are making a special environment while walking from one stand to another. But if you start walking towards the main train station you will see real magic happening. Couple of minutes after the main square you will ran into a park called Zrinjevac. There you see Christmas lights on every tree and more stands where you can find candy, handmade things, more food and more wine. Passing through that and continuing towards the main train station you are coming to the best part of Zagreb Christmas market – the ice skating rink called Ledeni park (Ice park). It’s huge and it’s the most visited place in December. The line to get in there to ice skate is long and to be honest It was waaay to long for my patience so I didn’t went ice skating but I’ve watched people and even though that doesn’t sound fun at all trust me it is. Just hanging around it gives you pleasure because you have music playing, people laughing, eating more of those fritters and hot dogs and drinking wine.

Second Stop: Štrba?ki Buk Waterfalls on the River Una (Croatia)

The thing I loved the best about Biha? was a series of restaurants placed right along the river. Even though we thought coming there early in the morning would be such a waste (since we wouldn’t be able to eat famous Bosnian ?evapi), we soon realized that there was no need to worry one bit. The world’s greatest and most charming waiter ever proposed serving a modest breakfast for the three of us “just to have a bite with morning coffee before we hit the road.” If you’ve never been to Balkans before, this is how a “modest” breakfast looks like: tons of meat products (salami, ham, prosciutto, etc), twice as many milk products (kajmak, various cheeses, crème-cheese, etc) topped with scrambled eggs and some paprika along with it.  Did I also mention that you can ask them to serve the food on a small boat so that you could eat it at the very center of the river? Just imagine the level of romance with your beloved one! Second Stop: Štrba?ki Buk Waterfalls on the River Una (Croatia) Needless to say – judging by the promising beginning of this road trip we had one hell of a day ahead of us. After we’ve finished with our “light” breakfast, fortunately for me – we headed to the Una River Waterfalls. Waterfalls are probably my favorite nature’s creation. I could stare at them all day long! They just have this powerful, cleansing energy, and if you share these thoughts – make sure to visit these.

Fairytale of Croatia - Plitvice Lakes National Park

Explore Croatia The Balkan Peninsulam, that is placed on the south of Europe, is surrounded by the Adriatic, Ionian, Mediterranean, Aegean and the Black sea. It got its name after the Balkan mountains. This extremely underrated European region is full of amazing geological structures and formations, national parks, lakes, protected areas and natural wonders that leave nature lovers from all over the world completely breathless.

Korcula: Island Paradise In Croatia

Croatia – I’m sure you’ve all heard of it. A place that is being hailed the new French Riviera, due to the natural beauty of this Baltic country and its popularity among foreigners. It really does have it all; beaches, lush forest and park land, and a distinct culture which is still not widely known outside of Eastern Europe. Unlike Greece, the terrain of Croatia is green and fertile, so the backdrop at the beach is generally a lot more picturesque. Since the explosion of ‘Game of Thrones’ onto our television/computer screens, the old city of Dubrovnik has generated a huge influx of tourists. With the end of the war, Croatia has now become one of the most popular spots for travellers young and old, completing a European summer holiday. While areas frequented by tourists will set you back cost wise on par with other major European cities, due to the lower value of currency, it is still possible to travel around Croatia on a budget. One place this is possible, is the beautiful Island of Korcula, a 1 hour and 30 minute ferry ride from Dubrovnik.

Plitvice Lakes: a frozen paradise during winter

When thinking about my favorite natural spots to visit, Plitvice Lakes National Park comes right away to my mind. It was last December when I was traveling through Croatia with my sister, and part of our itinerary was definitely visiting the well-known to be amazing Plitvice Lakes. Most people think of it as a summer destination, but during winter… it is spectacular!

My second home

When the majority think of Croatia, they think of crystal clear waters in Hvar, the amazing waterfront in Split or the old town of Dubrovnik. Majority don’t know of all the hidden gems Croatia has to offer, and by gems I mean towns. If you’re looking for an adventure off the radar, or away from the mainstream there are many places that are slightly less known and incredibly amazing. City Walls, Old Town – Dubrovnik

A Week in Dubrovnik

With high stone walls rising up out of the rocks, Dubrovnik, Croatia looks like it’s been set in the ocean itself, the water around it a deep azure, fading into teal, then a light green, until the small, clear waves gently roll onto shore, the sound of stones rushing over each other as the water drags them back out to sea. A fairytale city, full of red-roofed buildings, endless stairs, and stray cats.

Travel Guide to Zagreb,Croatia

Exploring the heart of Croatia for the first time      It’s not news anymore that traveling solo can be an incredible opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth. This summer I have experienced one of my longest solo trips ever, a month of traveling through the Balkanic Peninsula.  One of the highlights on my itinerary was Zagreb –  the small, but so beautiful capital of Croatia. Not only because of it’s amazing, super friendly inhabitants, also because of the special and unique vibe and rhythm of the city which makes you fall in love with it almost instantly.      I spent nearly 4 days in Zagreb but didn’t feel like leaving even after discovering all the main attractions of the city (two days were enough for this). I guess it’s because of the people, or maybe because the mood of the city is so contagious that even after a very short period of time spent here I began to feel like an inhabitant. And the think that I was Couchsurfing throughout the trip, has emphasized this feeling even more! I was delighted by the hospitality of the people of Zagreb.

Dubrovnik, Croatia- The Hidden Gem

In 1991 Slovenia and Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia and following this, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following this battle for independence war escalated for territory between Croatia and Serbia causing the deaths of over 100000 people. Tensions were high, crime ever evident and destruction of many towns was widely spread ending only by the signing of the Dayton Peace Accords on December 1995 officially ending the war.

Magic of coastal Croatia

Being born and raised in coastal Croatia it is no strange thing to think about it as magical. Probably everyone is thinking the same thing about their home. After years of traveling and living abroad being home again made me look at it in a different way. I see more and more people from around the world coming here every year in larger number, so I guess I am not the only one who thinks it is special in some way. I have met many people who stayed here more than planned even though it was just a stop on their way. There is definitely something magical here, hey, even Game of thrones crew was thinking that when they took Croatia for one of their filming locations.

Where Is Klis And How To Reach It?

Klis is situated in the hinterland, on about 15 km from the city of Split. Easy reachable by the car or taxi (it takes approximately 15-20 minutes). Moreover, if you are coming to Split from a highway, you can not miss this place as it is on halfway from highway exit to Split. There are also few bus lines that depart from the center of Split. The two-way ticket should not cost you more than 30 HRK (approximately 4 EUR). After meeting local people on the way there and small chat in the bus, be ready to discover Klis. Prepare that all information you will get from grannies in the bus will be explained using hands and Croatian language even though they see you don’t understand Croatian. Well, I guess that’s beauty of traveling and ability to meet new people and cultures.
