Things to see and do while backpacking in Zagreb, Croatia.

Check out tips from other travellers and bloggers and their experiences in Zagreb, Croatia.

If you're already planning to visit Zagreb, Croatia - scroll to the next section for a list of the best places to stay.

It  took about 5-6hours for me to complete the whole route. So by the time I end up back at the entrance, it’s only about 4pm. I contemplated taking another round with a shorter route, but decided against it. And so, the sounds of the splash from the great waterfall slowly fades from behind as I walk out of the park. Just right outside the park, there were some souvenir stores where you can buy some keepsakes and light snacks (pricing is slightly on the steep side, but this is a tourist attraction). To fully explore the park, I would suggest buying the 2-day tickets to allow you more time around the park. If you are short on time, you can simply do a day trip from Zagreb or Split (remember to start early).

How to visit Rovinj…

Rovinj is easily reachable by plane (and then by car) from Pula, Zagreb, Rijeka, Ljubljana, Trieste, Venice, by boat from Venice and by bus from Zagreb and Rijeka. The best time to visit is from May to October, August being the busiest month, with tons of events, but quite crowded.

Hitchking: From Budapest to Zagreb

It’s one thing to say and believe it, but fear is our most primal instinct, and instead of denying it we should use it to make this hitchhiking experience as safe as possible. This was my first hitchhiking on the road experience so I learned before and during the process, but I’m just a beginner, this is NOT an ultimate guide. I will share some of my steps to overcome the fear, and kind of use it on my behalf, and hope it’s useful for you as well. Read a lot, search for travelers that hitchhike regularly and read about their experiences, both good and bad. Check legal issues about hitchhiking in the route you wanna do, in some countries as USA and Brazil is illegal to hitchhike at all, in European Union you can only hitchhike in gas stations (I found out that doing the worst way possible) Use your intuition, if it says, “don’t get in this car”, don’t second guess it Do not mistake fear for intuition Relieve your fear with some caution measures like photographing the car plate before getting inside it and sending to a trusted friend, and giving updates on your location as much as possible as well. Plan the distances versus length of the day Avoid hitchhiking at night, but it still might happen, don’t freak out over it. Don’t freak out at all! If you are on the verge of freaking out, breath deeply. Be positive Be friendly, even when you don’t speak the language, make an effort, smile. If necessary: stop being so friendly, and firmly ask to get out of the car Hitchking: From Budapest to Zagreb It took me forever to get out of my house and finally go to the gas station that is the hitchhiking point in Budapest, from 7 AM till 10 AM to be more precise, and I had a plan B, just in case none would stop: get the train. And when I got there I was sure that the plane B would be the one, cause that area was under construction, so I started to proceed to get a bus to go back to the train station, I found a piece of road, in Zagreb’s direction, with a roadside in which I could sign to the cars and they could stop. JACKPOT!

Travel Guide to Zagreb,Croatia

It’s not news anymore that traveling solo can be an incredible opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth. This summer I have experienced one of my longest solo trips ever, a month of traveling through the Balkanic Peninsula.  One of the highlights on my itinerary was Zagreb –  the small, but so beautiful capital of Croatia. Not only because of it’s amazing, super friendly inhabitants, also because of the special and unique vibe and rhythm of the city which makes you fall in love with it almost instantly.      I spent nearly 4 days in Zagreb but didn’t feel like leaving even after discovering all the main attractions of the city (two days were enough for this). I guess it’s because of the people, or maybe because the mood of the city is so contagious that even after a very short period of time spent here I began to feel like an inhabitant. And the think that I was Couchsurfing throughout the trip, has emphasized this feeling even more! I was delighted by the hospitality of the people of Zagreb.

How to get there

The closest points to Plitvice are Zagreb, Zadar or Split. We were staying in Zagreb for a couple of days and planned to visit the Plitvice Lakes National Park, Plitvi?ka jezera in Croatian, for one day, and then continue to Zadar.

Why Zagreb?

Growing up, I had two identities: American and Croatian.  My first international trip was to Croatia in 1996, right after the country’s civil war.  At this point, it was not considered “safe” to travel to Croatia.  In fact, during our layover in Prague, a woman yelled at my mom for bringing me, a small child, into a “war zone.”  My mother did not pay attention, as she was desperate to see her family as she was not able to see them all throughout the war.  It was also a good lesson for me, to not be afraid of and to not avoid countries labelled as “dangerous.”  Throughout my youth, I constantly was traveling to Croatia and other Balkan countries, which helped me develop my love for international travel. Why Zagreb? Croatia has come a long way since the 1990s.  It is now one of the top Mediterranean travel destinations, competing with locations like Italy, Spain, and Greece.  With (arguably) the bluest sea in Europe and thousands of islands to explore, it is no surprise that it has become one of Europe’s hottest destinations.  Oh, did you know that Game of Thrones is filmed in Croatia as well?  Thanks to the popular television series, tourism has soared in Croatia, especially in the filming location of Dubrovnik.

Zagreb : the conqueror of hearts

The title is not just another random phrase, written only to attract readers. For me, it is the bitter-sweet truth, because I am 335 km away from the place where my heart lies.

Welcome to Zagreb

Bok, dobrodošli u Zagreb!- Hi! Welcome to Zagreb! The capital of Croatia. No matter if you’re on the airport or if you came by a bus or a train, your first stop is Glavni Kolodvor aka Central Station. You can grab a cab or a tram from there, even though, if it’s sunny I recomend you take a ten minute walk to the main square –Square of Ban Josip Jelacic.

A Road Trip from Zagreb to Hvar Island

Our fabulous road trip took place last summer. If you want to get to Hvar Island as soon as possible, take a highway from Zagreb and you’ll be there in no time (4-5 hours tops). But, if you’re feeling a little bit more adventurous – make Biha? (Bosnia and Herzegovina) your first stop.

Why visit Zagreb, Croatia?

Croatia has many attractive and popular travel destinations, so the capital city of Zagreb might not be the first location that comes to mind when choosing a place or city to visit here. But Zagreb actually has a lot to offer, especially to people who like art, culture, history and good food. This article will walk you through some of the main attractions, some famous, other not so much, and also talk a bit about history.
