Things to see and do while backpacking in Bulgaria.

Check out tips from other travellers and bloggers and their experiences in Bulgaria.

If you're already planning to visit Bulgaria - scroll to the next section for a list of the best places to stay.

Morocco! The theme is not new but the prospective is different!

The next morning we woke up early, fresh and enthusiastic, ready for the real hike – only 900 m vertical drop but the terrain is really steep, icy and snowy. We took our breakfast firstly, then prepared bottle of water, some chocolate and sandwiches and put them into one of the backpacks. We didn’t forget to take with us also a small bottle of Bulgarian Rakia for the peak – this is a tradition. What else could you possibly say when you are at 4167 m but “Nazdrave!”?

Time travel in Bulgaria: Peshtera

The city of Peshtera is located in the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria, and it provides numerous activities for both those who seek adventures and those who prefer to have just a retreat. It lies about 40 kilometers from Plovdiv, so if you have a spare day or two, I recommend visiting. Many people visit Bulgaria’s ski resorts in winter or seaside resorts in summer, but off the beaten track the country is rich in natural landscapes, archeological sites and recreational parks that are open year-long. For other destinations in Bulgaria, you can check out my blog or just follow my page on Facebook. Peshtera and around The city itself is relatively small, with a population of about 20 000 and one main street with shops, cafes and a central square. It is known for its wine factory as well as several shoe factories. However, travelers can find a lot more there.  The highlights I want to share with you here are the recent Cars of Socialism Museum and the ancient Peristeri Fortress, both of them situated within the town, and the Snezhanka Cave, the town of Batak and the Tsigov Chark dam that are the major attractions in the region. When I was a child, I used to stay at Tsigov Chark every summer for at least two weeks and I’ve witnessed the development of these places during the years. They are still my favorite getaway destinations for the weekends.

River Iskar

Finally, we found a spot between Samokov and Sofia that was perfect for us two and our little orange tent. Beautiful green grass and cold not so clean water. However, we were happy to call this place ours for the next 24 hours. It is rare to find girls that ride bikes out of the cities in Bulgaria. It is even rarer to see these girls camping. However, we have done it a few times and I would say that it is rather not too dangerous. The more difficult part of our adventure was to find a safe place that was not too crowded at the same time. If you look at the map you will notice that Bulgaria is a small country with many mountains and fairly long seaside. In the summer we like to breathe fresh air and if you are not a fan of wild nature, then most probably you will share your space with some other nature lovers. The place we chose was on the river Iskar, which is the longest river in Bulgaria and as Wikipedia says its length is 368 km. We placed our tent on Riverside on the humble 1 meter and we even had a little space for the campfire. The truth is that it took us around 30 minutes to find a good place for camping and around 1 hour to clean the area from the trash some other nature lovers left after them.

Sofia, Bulgaria: Start of the Balkan Tour

Backpacking the Balkans began in Istanbul, where my partner and I currently live. We had contemplated wether to take a train or a bus to Sofia and eventually decided on taking a train. The Turkish websites for train are very bad and outdated. We had arrived at the train station and we had a shuttle to take us a 4 hour bus ride to the Turkish-Bulgaria border. While on the bus I was the only person who was of Turkish background and the bus driver and host had approached me and said they have a surprise for me at the border, later on the bus ride I had found out that they wanted me to buy them bottles of alcohol at the border. A little shocked and disappointed that the surprise was really for them, I had agreed. We got to the train station at around 2:30 am and after going into the customs office and through the x-ray machine I made my way over to the hole in a wall to get two bottles of Jim Beam for our bus drivers. When I had got there, there was a group of older Bulgarian men and a female who were making a large purchase of cigarettes. The guy at the counter asked if I could get them cigarettes and expecting a little tip I accepted. The gift I received were two bottles of water and cakes. Pathetic. Trying to get back to the bus to give the driver his goods, the Turkish border police asked where I was going and I played dumb. The bus driver told the police that it was their drinks, a little scared at this point, I handed the bag to the driver and the police simply told him next time tell us before you do that. As he said that I walked away and boarded the train at 3 am with my girlfriend Alexa.

Plovdiv - Bulgaria’s Unique and Most Ancient Destination

Plovdiv – Bulgaria’s Unique And Most Ancient Destination Bulgaria is gaining more and more fame every day for its magical places and natural wonders. It’s a country that has it all despite its small size – from attractive cities with a rich history of beautiful mountains and golden Black sea beaches.

A Weekend at the Roof of the Balkans

Bulgaria is probably one of those places that you have heard almost nothing about – yet, whenever you have come across someone who has been there at least once, the feedback has invariably been one of amazement, if not slight bewilderment. On the one hand it’s a small country, roughly the size (and population) of Arizona. On the other, Bulgaria sports a tremendous diversity of cultural sites, folk traditions, and yes, breath-taking landscapes as well. From the ancient quarters at the heart of its major cities Sofia and Plovdiv, to the quaint tiny villages nestled amidst mountains awash with greenery; from the sunny Black Sea coast in the east lined with fine sands of gold, to the imposing shades of the colossal peaks in the west – there are tons of treasures, both historical and natural, that are just ripe for exploration. All it takes is some adventurous spirit, and a pair of strong legs to carry you across the magnificent scenery.

Nessebar, Bulgaria: A romantic walk through the wooden city

The city of Nessebar is situated in southeastern part of Bulgaria at the Black sea coast. It is, as one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria, attracting travellers from all around the world by its magnificence and romance. The historical roots of the city are reaching to the times of antiquity, when in the Bronze age the tribe of Thracians founded their settlement at the territory of today’s Nessebar. Back then they called the settlement Melsambria, after its founder and leader Melsa (Melsambria = The city of Melsa). In the 6th century the Greeks started to build many temples and schools in the city and that is how it started expanding – the huge city walls, leading around the whole city, were built in this period as well. Later Melsambria became a part of the Roman empire and Christian churches were built and the city was all renovated. In the time flow Nessebar was also a part of the Ottoman empire, there were battles raging around and diseases spreading, but the city of Nessebar is still standing with its majesty and after all this time still taking the breath of its visitors away.

Bulgaria - Plovdiv and Sunny Beach: History and nature

Bulgaria is a beautiful country which is not very high on (m)any bucket list(s). I visited this amazing country for 4 days this month, and want to take you on a journey why Bulgaria is a must see country in my opinion.

Longing for traditional Christmas? Then you should visit Bulgaria

With the western version of Christmas increasingly resembling an egoistic festival of greed (or I am being a bit too harsh?), it’s nice to know that countries like Bulgaria – country in the southern part of Europe) – can still offer something in the way of wacky traditional ritual. Many Bulgarian yuletide customs are full of Christmas symbolism, while others date back to a more distant, pagan past. Nowadays many of those are mixed together, creating something really unique.

Varna: A place for every taste

I’m from Macedonia, so Bulgaria is our neighbor country and very close to us and yet this year was my first time visiting Bulgaria in the summer. I always thought of Bulgaria as my ‘winter hideout’ visiting the many ski centers and Spa resorts it has. The only thing I can say: I wished I spent my summers here before.

'Discovering Bulgaria: Part One'

Bulgaria is one of those neighbor countries that somehow never ended up on my travel list. Just once in 2012. I passed it on the road to Istanbul. I remember it only vaguely, as a country which our driver passed in one hectic drive, not making a single stop. It looked back then, that he was scared of stopping as if someone will attack or rob us. Or maybe he was just eager to reach Turkey. Who knows? Anyway, its 2016 now and I decided to join my three friends in discovering skiing opportunities in this, until then, unknown country. As a place to do that we chose Bansko.

Burgas: The most beautiful and thriving city at Bulgarian coast

Bulgaria is a beautiful country, located in the Southeastern Europe and it is bordered by the Black Sea to the east. Due to the small territory that it lays, Bulgaria offers a great variety of nature – mountains, rivers, sea, plains, which can be reached easily and in a short time. The four seasons that the country has are a prerequisite for enjoying all different activities and experiences which are done according to the weather conditions.

Surprise.. Sofia!

I found a cheap plane offer. I never had in my plans Bulgaria, but I have in my plans everything that I didn’t do yet. Plus, I’m an autumn seeker and Sofia is one of the best cities where to see autumn colors.
