Veliko Tarnovo is amazing beautiful Bulgarian town which is a great touristic destination. There is a lot to see – many historical and cultural sightseeings, beautiful landscape and gorgeous castle. The town is absolutely stunning with a breathtaking view because it is situated on a few hills and through it is passing magnificent river Yantra. In history, the town was two times the capital of the country. You can spend an amazing day or even few days in Veliko Tarnovo and have more time to experience the history, the culture and the delicious traditional cuisine.
You can start your day from the hill where is situated the castle. This is the most famous sightseeing in Veliko Tarnovo and it an architectural museum. There are 3 entrances in the fortress walls, the main castle in the centre of the complex and two towers. You can also see the ruins of the Medieval town inside with main street, many temples, monasteries and more 470 houses. It is a great historical experience. In the summer and on special historical events you can attend an amazing light show called “Sound & Light” in the evening. It is one of the most romantic things you can experience in the town.
The park of miniatures Small Bulgaria is the newest tourist attraction in the town and it is located under the fortress Tsarevets. There you can see all the emblematic and famous sightseeings of Bulgaria. If you are in Veliko Tarnovo, don’t miss it.
On the next hill across the river and close to Tsarevets you can visit Trapeznica fortress. It has strong walls, many churches and in the past was the close neighbourhood to the capital. There are ruins of many houses, monastery and streets.
Monument of Asenevtsi
The two hills with the castle and the fortress are surrounded by the different sleeves of Yantra river. Down the river is the Monument of Asenevtsi. It is a really beautiful building and monument which is made in the honer of 4 kings, 3 of whom were brothers and one was their heir and they are all from the Asen dynasty.
If you continue your way up from the river in the town part of Veliko Tarnovo, you can have a nice walk on the old streets of the town where you will feel the spirit of the traditions and old times. The architecture of the houses is preserving the history and you can see how they were made in the past of stones and wood. It is really beautiful and you can feel this revival spirit everywhere around you. The streets are built of stones or pavements. You can visit the old school, the old library and many thematical museums. You can also see a lot of cosy souvenir shops and nice restaurants. I love to visit the restaurants there because of their amazing terraces from where you can experience the best view of the town to the river, Tsarevets and the Monument of Asenevtsi. And don’t miss the opportunity to try the traditional Bulgarian cuisine.
