An Introduction to Craft Beer in Vancouver, Canada

There’s nothing like a cold beer after a day of voracious sightseeing. Vancouver has the sightseeing covered- from crossing suspension bridges to literally climbing up a mountain there’s tons of ways to get very thirsty. Luckily Vancouver also has the best Craft Beer scene in Canada. Even the dodgiest little hole in the wall will have at least one local offering! These are some of the can’t-miss places from the party district and the suburbs.

Calgary : Gateway to the Rocky Mountains

To start off, a little about the weather: Calgarians LOVE to talk about the weather. And Calgary has its fair share of wacky weather. Winter temperatures average at around -14°C, however can plummet to -30°C. However, it’s not just your average cold Canadian city. Due to its close proximity to the mountains, (About 100KM from the entrance to the Rockies – relatively close for Canada) a warm wind weather system known locally as a “Chinook” graces Calgary with its presence in the winter months raising the temperature by, in some cases 40 degrees, to a balmy 10-20°C within a few hours, and lasting for up to a week before returning back to sub-zero temperatures. This gives Calgarians a break once in a while from the frigid cold, and is a very much beloved weather condition by the locals. People take full advantage, and you can see people walking around in shorts and short-sleeve shirts in the middle of January. This phenomenon may seem unnatural to visitors, some even claiming it to be “global warming” (*cough*Leonardo DiCaprio*cough*) but rest assured, it is very natural, and you can see a beautiful cloud formation called a “chinook arch” westward towards the mountains.

Canada’s First Capital : Kingston, Ontario

Living really far North in upstate New York means my hubby and I really feel far from civilisation. Our beloved New York City is a tiresome five-hour drive away, and even the closest major city, Syracuse, is a little over an hour away itself. But one of the perks of being this far North, is that Canada is right on our doorstep. So as soon as we got the chance, we took advantage of this fact, hopped in the car and set off. It was a bizarre feeling to be entering another country just half an hour from our apartment, but, so, so exciting as this was my first ever time visiting Canada!

Workaway- volunteering in business’s or home stays in exchange for food and accomodation

I enjoyed using helpx because it included a wide range of organisations and experiences. You can volunteer at an organic farm in Canada, a resort in Cambodia or a school in Peru. I have yet to use the other sites but have met many people who have and they have had great experiences.

Golden Adventure: Kicking Horse Mountain Resort

The town of Golden, BC is tucked away in the mountains of western Canada. It is a quiet sleepy little town, but don’t let this trick you into thinking that it isn’t worth the stop on a drive through the mountains. While many tourists choose to stop at the better known towns of Banff or Jasper, Golden offers plenty for the adventure-minded traveler to do. It is also ideal for those who seek a quiet area to relax and for families looking for some fun.

Liz Ferguson

Hot Springs

Fairmont Hot Springs: Although this town was built around this resort, these pools aren’t even close to the nicest in the area. This is the location in which I was employed at the time as a lifeguard, and it’s a pretty epic place to make some cash year round if you’re ever wondering what you should do with you life for a couple months or so. Somewhat expensive, and insanely packed in peak season, the springs are man-made and include three different pools, all with varying temperatures. If you time it properly (in the off season), it’s quite possible that you’ll get these pools all to yourself. A hot pool, a cold (but still disgustingly warm) lap pool, and a dive tank with a one and three metre diving board, is what people from all over Canada come to take advantage of year round.

Planning Your Trip: Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada

The majestic and world-renowned Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada, is a popular tourist destination for a reason. From stunning snow-capped mountains, to mint blue glacial waters, everywhere you glance in this unique spot in the Rockies has an awe-inspiring quality. I lived and worked in Lake Louise for the 2016 season, and I can assure you that the surroundings never fall short of taking your breath away.

Moving from Europe to Canada

Moving from Europe to Canada Introduction When I was young, I enjoyed geography — I was always researched countries, flags, history and was able to find any country on the map almost instantly. Love for travel stayed with me since then. I had always dreamed of traveling the world, yet being from a small town in Croatia, it seemed impossible. Thankfully I chose an awesome career path — DJ — which gave me the opportunity to travel and explore many cities and countries. In this blog I will be writing my opinions and experiences as I discover different cities and countries, who knows — maybe you might get some useful tips from my travels, like what to see, eat, where to party and how to stay safe will abroad. So stay tuned, enjoy, listen to some of my music and enjoy! For my first post I will start with my longest trip that lasted for 3 years – Canada!

“Ya Bro, It Was Like 5 Degrees, But I Guess That’s Like Summer In Canadia. Get It, You’re Canadian So You Must Be From Canadia!”

Wish I could say that less than fifty percent of British/Australian people I’ve met have made this joke, but at least I’m able to curse at them in French after they make it; yay for bilingualism! All terrible jokes aside, I’ve come to realise that the world in general sees Canada as a cold, snowy place (a position that I’ve reinforced with my horror stories of the east coast winter 2015). Although for five to eight months of the year this may be true, every year a time comes when the humans, bears, and beavers of Canada attempt to shed their winter guts faster than the land can shed the snow (we rarely win). This beautiful time of year is summertime, and during summertime there is no better place to be than Banff!

Quebec: 6 must see places

I know Quebec is not the most popular province in Canada. When people usually plan a trip to Canada, they want to see the Rockies, Banff or Toronto. But Quebec has everything travelers love: mountains, sea, beautiful cities and different types of landscapes. From Montreal to Forillon and from Forillon to Natashquan, there are a thousand things to see and you should definitely see them for yourself. Here are 6 of my favorite places in Quebec (not in order), that you definitely need to see if you ever plan on coming to Canada one day.

Brighton & Hove: Living the Exchange Dream

Doing an exchange program had always been a dream of mine and 99% of my friends – I wouldn’t say 100%, because some of my friends have already been a exchange student before. My dream was going to ether Australia or UK, USA, Canada or any another English speaking countries to take a language course and also to see the world.

Adventure

My fiance, Ricky, and I had dreamed of living together in a mountain town so when we arrived in Canada with two year working holiday visas we were stoked for adventure and to see where it would lead us. Our first month was spent wandering around British Columbia, going to festivals and speaking to people about where to find great snow and a “Canadian” mountain town.

The aesthetic town of Banff, Canada – must see, eat and do

Banff is such a vibrant town and every traveler making their way to Alberta, Canada should make sure that they experience the best parts of it. You know you’re in a special place when all the buildings match and work perfectly with the beautiful mountains at every view point. This town is a tribute to the beautiful Canadian landscapes and the people living here definitely show that with their respect for the town. Even the public toilets have a log cabin look to them, are immaculate and play continuous smooth jazz, what gets better than that? The town of Banff truly is a united community where everyone is welcome.

Banff- Experiencing the Canadian Rocky Mountains

Banff is located in Alberta, Canada and is one of the most breathtaking places that I’ve had the privilege of visiting. Banff is a National Park and can often be quite expensive to visit, unless you have friends or family members there to stay with; however, I have visited Banff several times and would highly recommend saving the money, if needed, to experience it’s natural beauty. Below is a map outlining this gorgeous National Park.

What to do in Ottawa

Less famous than its three big sisters, Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver, the capital of Canada is often forgotten by tourists visiting this huge country. But with its strategic location at the French/English border, its proximity to nature, and its opened arms to the whole world, Ottawa has nothing less to offer than the well-known metropolises.

Hiking the Sunshine Coast Trail

The Sunshine Coast Trail (SCT) on mainland British Columbia, Canada is a fantastic, off the beaten track, hut to hut backpacking trail for determined beginners and seasoned hikers. This 180km trail provides views of the Salish Sea and neighbouring Vancouver Island, takes you through serenely wooded forests, peaceful lakes, and gorgeous mountain views. The SCT is also unique in that it is the longest hut to hut trail in Canada, and the cabins are completely free to use!
