Booking your very own winter wonderland

At first when I was booking my one way ticket to Germany in December, I was a little hesitant about the weather conditions. Especially being from Australia where the average temperature for winter is a measly 15 degrees, compared to Germany’s winter average of about 3 degrees. I could barely brave the cold that lies in Sydney, let alone Europe. Regardless of the weather, I booked my ticket and I went. First stop – Frankfurt, Germany. My first step into germany was at approximately 7am and I must admit, I was absolutely freezing. The cold was even worse than I had first imagined. Fast forward a couple weeks and I had adjusted to the cold pretty well. Locals would be walking around in snow jackets and coats, and I was surprisingly warm enough with a hoodie, beanie and scarf. You will adjust to the cold I promise. My current destination and definitely a favourite, is the beautiful Switzerland – in particular, Nendaz.

My Second Home

Today I’m writing about city which I was lucky enough to call home for one year as I explored my family background while improving my second language. Zurich has played a major part in my personal growth and I will always remember it as a culturally rich land of opportunity, cheese and chocolate. Yes, the food is hefty but too good to pass on. I really made the most of the Swiss culinary world while I was over there, but I’ll elaborate on the deliciousness later. The people I met became some of my closest friends and I miss them every day. It’s just bad luck that Australia and Switzerland are on opposite sides of the planet; having both my homes together would make things a whole lot easier.  I’m writing about my experiences in Zurich to share my discoveries of the city’s hidden gems and give you an idea of what it is like to travel there. I’ve been to many crazy cities in my life and Zurich is definitely one not to be missed.

Larissa

What is Chur?

The city of Chur is the capital of Switzerland’s easternmost Canton, Graubünden. Chur is celebrated as being the oldest city in Switzerland, with archaeological evidence going back 5000 years. The city is solidly located in the Alpine region, and the mountains that surround it have steep slopes; the upper parts of the mountain face are grey and rocky from being unable to host foliage. Grisons is the only Canton with three official languages (German-Italian-Romansch), but Chur is almost entirely German-speaking, so if you like to be polite and say words like please and thank you in the local language, remember this.

Experiencing the Swiss Alps

The second best thing about living in Switzerland is the outrageously good chocolate. It’s not a rumor, I dare you to bite into a hazelnut milk bar by Confiserie Sprüngli and tell me it’s doesn’t taste like a creation from heaven. The best thing, though, is that no matter where you are, you’re never more than an hour away from a mountain to climb. A hike through a scenery of green pastures, winding forest paths, crystal glacier lakes and breathtaking snowy peaks is an everyday occurrence for the Swiss. When the beautiful city of Zürich just felt too crowded and too stressful last weekend, I grabbed a bag of belongings and a hiking companion and up to the mountains we went.

Nathalie Ciara Walker

Lausanne – the Olympic Capital

Switzerland is a small wonderland that has lost somewhere in the mountains, it knows a lot about chocolate and watches, it breathes alpine air and it is stuck somewhere between stability and progress. Now I have an exclusive opportunity to explore this mysterious world.

Uliana.Che

Shaffhausen Full Of Water Power

Today we visited the canton of Shaffhausen. The name of this canton sounds for me like the blue city of Chefchaouen in Morocco.  Who knows or ever heard about this blue city can understand that I was so excited about this trip. This is the northernmost canton of Switzerland and lies almost entirely on the right bank of the Rhine, with only part of Stein am Rhein on the left bank. And we started from this town.

Of swiss cheese, trains and people

The first thing you should do before starting this article should be finding a playlist of Moby on youtube and clicking on it. Done? That was the playlist on my ipod while I watched Switzerland go by through a train window. It suited the panorama wonderfully.

A Journey to Cheese and Chocolate

If you go to Switzerland and don’t visit the Cailler chocolate factory in Broc or the cheese factory in La Maison du Gruyère in Gruyères, then for shame. Switzerland is the land of cheese and chocolate, so not indulging yourself in the essential commodities of this neutral country must be some kind of taboo. Not only that, but it’s a fabulous day trip because of the nice walking town in Broc, the beautiful train ride to Gruyères, the castle in the plains on top of a hill surrounded by a glorious medieval town, and famous fondue.

Khajjiar – The Mini Switzerland Of India

Khajjiar – The Mini Switzerland Of India  We all know about Switzerland but have you ever heard of mini Switzerland that too in India? It is in a very remote area of Himachal Pradesh and just like it’s name it is very small.  Khajjiar or Mini Switzerland is atypical combination of three ecosystem: forest, pasture and lake. Apart from a few shops, places of accommodation there is nothing but the serene beauty of the Dauladhar Mountains of the Himalayan Range and dense forest of Pine & Deodar trees. It is a perfect place for getting away from the tiring hustle and bustle of the city life.

Leysin: Heaven at 1200 meters

Leysin, a panoramic location situated at 1200 meters above sea level near Aigle, in the French part of Switzerland is a year around attraction for both local visitors as well international. Connected through a railway track as well as a road, Leysin can be reached by both making it accessible like most of the places in Switzerland. From Aigle one can take the scenic route and stop at the Leysin village or head directly at the top. Known also for its mild climate in summer, its health resort for people with lung issues, and the magnificent alps for snow lovers there is hardly any reason not to visit

Four Seasons in the Swiss Riviera

Many people come to Switzerland with quaint preconceptions: cows, cheese, chocolate, wine, and probably more cheese (and chocolate). While there’s absolutely no way that this can be disputed, take it from a 12-year resident: the Swiss Riviera is a beautiful maelstrom of so much more.

Swiss Public Transport

For those of you not used to public transportation, the Swiss public transport system is possibly the best way to learn its mechanics. I primarily use the public transport in Geneva, but the Swiss are highly repetitive when it comes to necessity, so public transport should be the same everywhere in Switzerland.

Luxurious Summer Getaway to St. Moritz

It was like a dream when I was finally at Tirano train station with a ticket to St. Moritz in my hand. Why St. Moritz and not other part of Switzerland like Mount Titlis or Lucerne?

Introduction

Switzerland always welcomes people who love outdoors. There’s skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, biking, hang-gliding, and most importantly, hiking. Hiking is possibly the easiest and cheapest outdoor activity to do in Switzerland. With Skiing and snowboarding, unless you have your own equipment, it can cost up to $300, including the ski/snowboarding pass. Hang-gliding is more than $100 because unless you are personally trained to hang-glide alone, and have your own equipment, you have to rent and pay for a professional to make sure you don’t die. If you do it all the time, biking gets expensive since you need the proper clothes, and bike upkeep. Kayaking is a bit cheaper, but you still need to rent out the kayak and pay for a pass depending on where you go. The only thing that isn’t expensive is hiking–the only thing you need to pay for is the train/bus ticket to your destination, because I’m betting you already have good tennis shoes (unless you want to hike seriously, then you’ll need to buy hiking shoes, but let’s face it. I only hiked for fun).
