Why You Need To Visit Lucerne, Switzerland

Way back in 2014, when I was fresh-faced youth, I lived in Switzerland for six months. Those were the best six months that I lived in the city. I didn’t get to experience the city because I was a student living on campus, but a year later, I came back. The experience was way better as a tourist than it was as a student. I realized I missed a lot.

One thing you should know is living in Switzerland is costly as an expat, but it is far better as a tourist. There are so many benefits that you get by being a tourist. When I was a student, I didn’t really get the opportunity to venture out of the campus except to go into the city and then come back. I didn’t get to see the attractions. My weekends involved me sitting down and getting my assignments done. That was about it, I didn’t really have the opportunity to go around the city. For one thing, when I was a student, I never went to Old town. I knew about it, but that was about it. I never walked around the city,  marveling at the statues and attractions.

I didn’t have time for it. When I came back as a tourist, it is then that I saw what truly makes Lucerne stand out from every other city in Switzerland. The truth is Switzerland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world; the lush pastures, clear blue skies, picturesque mountains and the sweet aroma in the morning makes it feel unreal. There’s a juxtaposition between Switzerland and its neighbours. When you are in Switzerland, you don’t want to leave it behind. Everything feels like a movie or a painting.

Lucerne is called the atmospheric city in Switzerland for a reason

Lucerne gives you a taste of what Switzerland has to offer. Everything about it feels as if you are looking at paintings. There’s so much in Lucerne that makes it stand out from many cities in Switzerland. Lake Lucerne is a must see to anyone who comes to Lucerne, it is the fourth largest lake in Switzerland. You can take everything in by exploring the lake on the historic paddle boats or if you are up for an adventure you could even tour the water’s edge on foot.

If you prefer breathtaking views then Mount Pilatus is up your street. The mountain is steeped in history as should be expected; this is Switzerland we are talking about. Apparently in Middle Ages people said that a dragon sat on top of the mountain. These days, people don’t go dragon sight-seeing, they go for the views. You can take a cable car or a gondola.

The Alps

The great thing about Lucerne is it’s located near to the Alps. It takes a couple of minutes to get there. The snow-capped mountains are a wonder in winter, it is also a great place to ski or snowboard. The first time I ever snowboarded I was in Lucerne. There are dozens of mountains to choose from besides the Alps.

When I look back at that experience, I appreciate it, because it taught me so much about myself. It also taught me how to have fun. In the past, I was a little too serious, but for once I let loose in Switzerland. Falling on the ice hurt more than I thought it would, but it was so worth it. It was about $200 to do it, the great thing was I got an instructor who ended up getting annoyed with me.

It also has a number of five-star hotels that cater to people who go there to ski. There was a day when I worked in the ski department store. My job there was to cater to anyone who came to ski. They would inquire about how much snowboards cost and ski sticks. As soon as I walked outside, I was greeted by the cold harsh air and the ground was blanketed by a thick layer of snow.

The Chapel Bridge is also Known as Kapellbrucke

This happens to be one of the most popular bridges in Switzerland. It is one of Lucerne’s most iconic sites. The footbridge also can be used to go from Old to New town and vice versa. Though, most people marvel at the paintings all along its interior and the shop vendors selling Swiss trinkets. This bridge is one of the oldest in Europe and it has developed a name for itself.

All one has to do is google Lucerne and this bridge is the first thing that pops up. It is one of its kind and at night, it lights up. It truly is a magical event; the great thing is it happens every night.

Old and New Town

This has to be one of the main reasons you go to see Switzerland, for me it was. An experience I can’t forget. I couldn’t pry my eyes away when I stared at the fountain in Old Town to the Culture and Convention City that is located in the heart of Lucerne. The Swiss Museum of Transport is known to be the best museum in the country, it is an interactive event even for kids. It features transport from the air, sea, space, and land.

One thing that you have to do is do a day trip to the city centre, venture from Old to New town. It is an experience that you definitely need to do. There’s such a big difference that one would think that they are in a completely new city. In New Town everything is modern, even the buildings and when you cross the bridge to get to Old Town. The pavement is cobblestone and it truly feels like a Charles Dickens novel.

There are many reasons why you should visit Switzerland, but the main ones are what I listed above. You should definitely go; it is an experience you won’t ever forget.
