Whether you want to trade the big city vibes for some fresh air, enjoy long walks in the park in a beautiful scenery or meet locals in their favourite pub for the weekly quiz, Cambridge, UK has it all!

One of the United Kingdom’s most popular cities, Cambridge is located north-east of London, just a 48 minutes train ride from London King’s Cross station which makes it the perfect destination for a week-end trip. When in the city you can enjoy the outdoor by commuting everywhere by foot or cycling. Indeed, the city is equipped with rental bikes by Mobike. This way, you can hop on and hop off any available bike on the street thanks to their app.

City filled with Nature

Among all the amazing things Cambridge is known for its country-like scenery is by far my favourite. The city is perfectly built around nature to have all the commodities of a big city while feeling deep in the countryside.

Cambridge University’s Botanic Garden

For a big bowl of fresh air, the Botanic Garden presents a 16 hectares park filled with green houses, ponds and hundreds of different species! The Botanic Garden offers a variety of courses and tours every weekend.

Punting: a must do in Cambridge

As you walk through the city, you will not be able to miss the punting boats making their way through the streets on the river Cam. Indeed, Punting is a popular activity in Cambridge, whether you’re a local having a day out with friends or a tourist eager to learn more about the city. There are two main departure points for punting trips on the Cam. Next to the Mill pub on Granta Place, which also features a lovely park, you can either go on a ride with a driver through the many colleges or you can go by yourself in the opposite direction along the park. You can also depart next to Magdalene Bridge for a ride between the colleges, your driver will tell you all about their stories and secrets!

If you are feeling like resting, Jesus Green is here to welcome you, on the banks of the river Cam this park is a locals favourite! Within walking distance of the city centre it is the perfect spot to rest all year round! You can also take a long walk along the river into the open fields.

Things to do in Cambridge

Visiting just for the week-end or for a week? Either way the city has many activities to keep you entertained! Home to many prestigious alumni Cambridge opens the door to most its Colleges for you to visit, they all have different rules concerning visitation, which you can find on their respective website before going.

Escape game in the city centre

For those who are keen on solving mysteries, the city has several Escape Game location, my personal favourite being  LockHouse Games. Save the world from the Atomic Bomb or travel to Ancient Egypt to find a missing person! LockHouse also has many interesting board games at disposal at the front of the shop. All the entertainers are really nice and passionate, their escape games are guaranteed to be fun and challenging!

Play a game of pool in a local’s pub

Whether it is mid-afternoon, pre dinner chill or an evening plan I always love playing some pool in Cambridge. One of the best venues for this is the King Street run with three pool tables upstairs. This is a typical local’s pub, although it is close to the centre you will rarely see any tourist here. A 10 minutes walk from there you will find the Blue Moon pub, another local’s favourite, with one pool table, great selection of local beers and often live music.

Food & Drinks in Cambridge: Recommendation from a local

Going to the pub with your friends on Friday after work is one of the most typical things you can do in the UK, whether you are looking for a good pint or a non-alcoholic refreshment, a vegetarian meal or something meaty here are my top recommendations for you!

Top 3 meal recommendation in Cambridge

In the middle of a residential area close to the centre you will land in the Alexandra Arms with the best burgers in town, giant Jenga games and super friendly staff! The back garden with fairy lights will take you out of the city! If you are a big table you can try to call to book a table, we always manage to find place for us but it can be busy thanks to its popularity!

Heading back to the main roads will lead you to Ohayo Sushi, an absolute favourite! You can have your sushi there or have some take away. The chef does unique and amazing combination of sushi that I have hardly seen anywhere else! Even in Japan! If you are feeling adventurous try the Crispy Spicy Salmon Roll, the Prawn Tempura Roll or the Crispy Salmon Skin Cucumber Roll!

Fancy a slice of pizza ? Make your way to the Haymakers, north of the city for a great selection of pizza and plenty of space to find a table inside or in the garden! The Haymakers is home to many local who gather here to have a nice pint or even play some board games around the pub.

Enjoy a pint in the beer gardens around Cambridge

Down the street from the Alex, the Cambridge Blue is here waiting for you, with its big garden and outside bar in the summer months. The Cambridge blue offers a great selection of beers, a cosy atmosphere and often pub Quiz! If you are keen on doing the pub quiz make sure to sign up ahead of time as they might not be enough space for additional players on arrival.

For a fine tasting of local beer and a nice pizza from the food truck head to the Calverley’s brewery! With a rustic look, the inside is filled with beer kegs and long tables. Just outside a food truck offers pizza, but they are so good that you will likely need to queue! The brewery has many table outside and a couple inside, so if you are going in the cold of winter make sure to wear something warm!

Brunch in the City

For a fancy dinner on the river or an incredible brunch with the rising sun, try the Millworks with its working watermill. And if you are thinking about a good brunch with great coffee you can also check out the Hot Numbers Brunch menu, both locations of Hot Numbers offer the same selection.

Whether you stay a day or a week, spend your time in the parks or explore the many museums, Cambridge has so much to offer!
