New York City; the city that never sleeps. This city is charismatic, chaotic and beautiful in its own separate way. You’ll either love it or hate it. But one thing is for sure, there is no city in this world that will make you feel yourself the way that New York would. There is magic in this city, and it is entirely up to you to decide what you’re going to do with that magic.
I still remember the first time I’ve set foot in this busy city. I was 20–straight out of university. I had a suitcase and one backpack, inside the backpack I had my wallet with a $20 bill and my credit card, my passport, my phone, my journal, my personal copy of Sex and the City, and my Creative Writing diploma. I had nothing. I was nobody. But I was in New York, and somehow, it was everything. And ‘everything’ made complete sense.
There’s probably about a million reasons why New York City is the best city in the United States of America, and why one must travel to this city in order to feel free. But I have listed seven (7) reasons why everyone must take a trip to New York City, at least, once in their lives.
The food is spectacular!
Ever heard of the famous New York Pizza? I’m sure you’ve heard of it. It’s the perfect meal. You can eat it any time of the day. Breakfast? Lunch? Brunch? Dinner? Midnight Snack? Just go outside and look for the closest pizza shop. They’re always open 24/7, rain or shine…or should I say, rain, snow or shine? The best thing about this dish? It will only cost you a dollar! You’ve read that right. A slice of the famous New York Pizza is only $1 USD. Heaven on earth, literally.
Now, pizza isn’t the only thing that New York is known for. This city is a melting pot of cultures and my other favourite is the Halal Guys! If you haven’t tried or even heard of the Halal Guys, you are seriously missing out.
It’s the home of some of the most amazing museums in the world.
Have you ever seen the movie, Night at the Museum? Yes, it’s filmed in this exact museum; the American Museum of Natural History. A lot of fans of the movie have paid homage to this museum. But there is more to this museum than being just a movie location. It houses some of the most valuable artifacts in America’s history. It’s a great place to visit, especially if you are looking for more kid friendly places to visit in the city.
If you are more on the fashion or upper class side, then the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or the Met, is for you. If you have seen the TV Series, Gossip Girl, then I suppose you’d be familiar with this one.
The Met houses some of the world’s most extravagant and most sought after paintings and art collections. They annually host the famous Met Gala, which is really hard to get invited to.
Of course, if you are an avid fan of Vincent Van Gogh and if you are looking for something more modern, I suggest that you go to the Museum of Modern Art.
MoMA houses Van Gogh’s “Starry Starry Night” and a whole lot more different paintings that ranges from Picasso, Warhol and so on.
Of course, there are far more museums in this city that I can count, but these three are my favorites.
The whole city looks like it came out from the pages of Architectural Digest.
This city is full of amazing buildings. As a matter of fact, New York is home to some of the world’s most popular buildings; the Chrysler Building, the Rockerfeller Building, the One World Trade Center, the Flat Iron Building, and the Empire State Building, to name a few.
All these different buildings, play a significant role in forming what is the most magnificent city skyline in the world. Every detail is designed specifically and carefully for this city. Every building has its own story to tell, and some of them might have fallen, but they’ve helped in building that strong and fierce New York attitude.
It’s overflowing with culture and history.
The United States of America is a nation built by immigrants so naturally, its cities would be filled with different people from different cultures. Cities like New York are considered one of the world’s largest cultural melting pot.
Wherever direction you choose to go to, you’ll always end up somewhere interesting and fun, and you’ll always meet wonderful people. In New York alone, there are places called Chinatown, Little Italy, Little India, the Filipino Community, K-Town, and so on. These are people from different cultures that have gathered in New York City to celebrate their similarities. It’s one of the reasons why I love this city and its people. They come to New York to make a better future for themselves, but they never forget who they were before coming here. It’s part of the magic.
You can find love in this city.
New York City can be as romantic as Paris. I personally can attest to that. I have met wonderful people and I have fallen in love in this city. There is just something special about falling in love in a crazy city like this one. It’s like you are fighting against the world. It’s like finding yourself in another person. It’s like nothing I have ever experienced in my life. It’s like magic. And even though I did not end up with the guy whom I’ve fallen for, it doesn’t make New York any less romantic nor magical for that matter.
The people are not as snobby as everybody else pertain them to be.
New Yorkers are often characterized as fast walkers, fast talkers who are always on their phone and will bump you if you get in their way. Well, these are true…some of them are like this. But the rest of us are probably to friendliest people that you will meet. New Yorkers are normal people. We stop by to smell the flowers at bloom in Central Park. We still get constantly amazed whenever our national team win at sporting events. We get pissed whenever the train breaks down. We do brunch quite seriously. We love. We smile. We are pretty damn great at giving tourists directions. We’re just people.
It’s the greatest city on earth!
If you want to feel freedom, love and passion all at once, then I suggest that you take a once in a lifetime trip to New York City.
Some people say that it’s the buildings that give New York its magic. Some people say it’s the lights. Some might even say it’s the history. But you know what gives New York its magic? It’s the people like you and me who come to this city to turn their dreams into reality. It’s the passion, those late night working session and the strength of the people that fuels this crazy city to stand tall and be what it is today.
If you have not visited New York, then I suggest you do. It’s probably to best gift that you could give yourself. Take the risk. Take a leap. Take your time. New York will be waiting for you with open arms.
