Welcome to the live-music capital of America. Austin is known for its young, vibrant, and colorful vibe. In this post, I share a personalized experience of exploring the street art, watching the bats fly under the bridge, and be part of live music performance.
These are the top things to do in Austin if you are in the city for one day.

Take Austin Street Art Tour

There is no street or corner in Austin, where you will not find some form of art or graffiti. Take the free street art tour with Tipster that takes you around East Side of Austin. On the way, the guide tells you stories behind each piece of art and also the artist. It is a free tour and does not need any prior booking. But as a polite gesture, make sure to pre-book from their website and tip the guide if you enjoy the tour.

Relish the Texas Tacos

If this your first time in Texas, make sure to stop at Torchy’s Tacos for a quick bite. Apparently, they are one of the top Taco serving chains in Austin. Torchy’s is quite famous amongst locals too, which is why you’ll find long queues the ordering counter. But despite that the service is quick and efficient.

Witness the artist’s paradise at Hope Outdoor Gallery

Get your spray paint along to leave your mark at this open canvas. Hope Outdoor gallery is a 3-storeyed building with walls painted by the in-town street artists. With no restrictions as to what and who paints on the walls, it is the perfect space for artists to express themselves.

Hike to Mt. Bonnell

Get the sporty inside you out and do an easy hike to Mt Bonnell. Although the peak is not too high, the view from the top is astounding. You can see all of Austin downtown, the 360 bridge over the Colorado River from the top. After a climb of around 100 steps, take a break and relax as you enjoy the beautiful views down below.

Take a cruise over the Lady Bird Lake

If you are in the city between March to November, you can witness one of the most amazing Mexican bat colony flying under the Congress Avenue Bridge. Take an evening cruise that takes you over the Lady Bird Lake from where you can watch the beautiful sunset, as well as the bats that were clinging to the bridge fly away.

Watch the Live Music Performance

Austin is famously known as the live music capital of the country, and you cannot miss being a part of such performance during your visit to the city.
While you’ll find more options on the weekends, but the city is not quiet during the weekdays too. Check the website for the latest events in the city.

Austin is more about a laid back vacation, especially during winters, when you can spend time enjoying the warm weather as the rest of the country freezes in the cold. But if you want to do just the touristy things, then 2 days are more than sufficient in the city.
