Amazing Glacier Lagoons In South Iceland

Last 6 years Iceland became really popular travel destination and a large number of tourists are coming every year. One of the most unique region for me and I believe for all Iceland is located 380 -420 km South East from Reykjavik. This is exactly the area where I spent most of my last 5 years. I highly recommend to everyone who is visiting Iceland to see this region, because no matter where you are going in Iceland you will never see such an amazing landscape, 2 breath-taking glacier lagoons with a lot of icebergs and seals, a diamond beach and a small farm village with a lot of history and unique museum.
When you are travelling from Reykjavik you will first reach Fjallsárlón. It is a fantastic small glacier lagoon with a stunning view. The lagoon is compact and although it is still huge you can easily see the mountains with all beautiful glaciers and the lagoon with crystal blue icebergs around. In the beginning, we were calling this place The Secret Lagoon, because nobody knew about it. Everybody was driving fast to Jökulsárlón. We loved to drive to Fjallsárlón and stay with hours watching the icebergs in the white nights. It was such a peace and quiet and you can even hear the beat of your heart. Nowadays it is a bit different because already the lagoon is made as a tourist attraction. There are restaurant and zodiac boats with which you can sail around the beautiful icebergs. The lagoon is still more beautiful than Jökulsárlón and with the boat, you can even touch the icebergs and be as close as possible to the glacier.
Jökulsárlón is the next stop, just more 20 km East. It is a huge lagoon with a lot of icebergs and you can see how the lagoon is ending up in the ocean. It is a really beautiful and unique experience. If you go to the top of the hills where you will see the most fantastic view you can’t see anywhere else in Iceland. So for me, it is absolutely strange if you visit Iceland, but you skip Jökulsárlón. You will definitely miss the most unique Icelandic nature – beautiful, but severe. You can also experience a zodiac boat or amphibian boat trip here.
Exactly where the Jökulsárlón lagoon meets the ocean there is the Diamond beach where you will see a huge amount of crystal clear ice on the beach. If you see the parts of ice they are so pure and made of the clearest water that was frozen 1000 years ago. Some of the ice blocks are enormous icebergs landed on the black volcanic sands. The picture is absolutely stunning like diamonds spilt around. Don’t miss it!
Hali is a small village just 9 km after the Jökulsárlón and Diamond beach and has a unique building with the shape of a bookshelf. It looks like a fairytale place where the trolls are living with giant books. In fact, the building is a museum of a famous Icelandic writer from the region and you can see his personal story, but also the history of the entire region. It is a really interesting place with a nice restaurant where you can try lobsters and guesthouses for a nice stay after a long drive.
