South Iceland Weekend Road Trip

The Icelandic countryside is like you’ve stepped onto another world. I am lucky enough to have a good friend living in Reykjavík who took me on a road trip along the south coast in the spring. I got to see so much more of Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes than I anticipated and I was struck by all of it. These were our stops along the way.

Iceland : The Land of Fire and Ice

Last October  2015, I decided to embark on my grandest adventure till date- a solo backpacking trip across Iceland. This island nation, situated close to the North Pole, is sparsely populated with only 3,00,000 people living in it. It is also the youngest landmass on Earth, which makes it geologically very active. Read on to find out more about this stunning land of raging volcanoes, spitting Geysers , northern lights and magnificent beauty.

Iceland, The Spade To Your Bucket List

There are so many places now where authenticity has all but dissolved and souvenir stalls set up. On most occasions, thrifters will appear in front of you bearing umbrellas before the rain has even come. You realise how many pointless gadgets they will attempt to sell you and begin to wonder where the hell their boss gets this stuff from. They share the ability, collectively, to turn a beautiful part of the world into a slightly less beautiful part of the world with a ton of persistent and negotiable salesmen. But, alas, there exists a place; outside the realms of selfie-sticks and fridge magnets, of flight paths by all popular airlines and outside normal daylight hours. Welcome to Iceland.

Jake McCann

Takk, Ísland / Thank you Iceland

I´ve always told myself, that to visit a country once is enough, because the world is so big and we only have one life. But then I spent 2 months working and travelling in Iceland. And I came back again another summer and probably will come again and again…here´s why:

Veronika Špirková

#2: Smile and wave boys, smile and wave

Channel those cartoon penguins folks. Smile politely, try to avoid any Jack Nicholson in “The Shining” vibes. Pray to whatever you believe in that they’ll feel your positive and appreciative energy. Most importantly: wave. Even if the 20th car has passed you and it’s raining sideways. I strongly believe that instant karma exists in our universe, if you keep putting out that good energy it will confidently find its way back to you. That being said; wave that lovely princess wave to all the bored backseat children, grouchy old folks, and Icelandic soccer moms (if such a thing exists here).

Sydney Rosenbaum

Hallgrímskirkja:

There’s an elevator up to the top of the church for spectacular views of Reykjavík. You’ll be safe up there, even if it’s windy, as you look through barred, opened “windows” and are not actually outside as such. When I went up, just before I got into the elevator it was bright and sunny outside and by the time I was looking out of the top, there was severe fog and snow. It passed quickly, but it was good to see such different sights at the same time! The weather is very, very changeable in Iceland.

Maria

Iceland: the day when I first saw a whale

Iceland. August. The journey takes only 2 weeks, not enough to explore this amazing country. I want to visit every corner, every town, every top, go through all the glaciers, to see as much as possible, but time was limited.

Ksusha Kuzmenko

Iceland: The icing on top of your trip

Wait, isn’t Iceland just covered in ice? First of all let me be completely honest and admit my naivety to everyone. Prior to the widely reported and dramatic eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in April of 2010, I wasn’t even sure Iceland was an inhabited place. I had recklessly placed it in the “rugged and only fit for the extreme traveller” pile. This it seems is a common occurrence, and indeed I believe the volcano sparked an interest in this crazy and amazing country. Only in 2014 did tourism overtake fishing as the largest industry in Iceland, and for a country that was bankrupted by its own government, the increase in tourism has been harnessed and encouraged in the most organised way. Now every year 1 million tourists visit Iceland, that’s three times the entire population. Iceland does has a very harsh and uninhabitable centre which is made up mostly of glaciers and extreme terrain, however I can assure that there is so much more to Iceland than just ice.

Reykjavik, Iceland: How to get the best experience

Iceland: Natural Paradise

Almost a year ago, my three flat mates and I made a spontaneous decision that I will never ever regret. Realizing that it is our last year as flat mates, we decided to take a trip together and none other than Iceland was our country of choice. Just as many other passionate travel addicts, I have a bucket list of countries I want to visit and Iceland was always near the top of that list and our trip to this beautiful country was one of the most incredible ones I have ever taken.

Iceland in Winter: A one week travel guide

Iceland: Why should you go in Winter? Iceland was somewhere I had always wanted to go, the first thing that drew me to it was the thought of seeing the Northern Lights but the more I looked into Iceland the more it seemed to offer. The only problem was it was January- mid winter in Iceland and the thought of a country with ‘Ice’ in the name in the middle of winter was scary. As it turns out, yes it was cold, really cold sometimes and yes it was short days but there were so many benefits to travelling Iceland in Winter. This really is a country that has something different to offer in all seasons. Here’s a guide to travelling Iceland in the winter with a week up your sleeve..

Snæfellsnes peninsula : The most hidden Icelandic wonder

Snæfellsnes, a relatively long peninsula in the western part of Iceland, has been my home since last August. I have been playing with the idea of visiting Iceland for a very long time. Life happens, people change, only this amazing nature around us tries its best to stay the same. Last summer, my greatest journey has started, and hopefully, will never come to its end. Immediately after landing on this magical island, I fell in love with the incredible Icelandic nature, the generosity of Icelanders and, most importantly, the unique way of life you cannot find anywhere else. Honestly, sometimes, I feel I am no longer on the planet Earth. High mountains, beautiful waterfalls, endless beaches, breathtaking lava fields, secretly placed geothermal hot springs; these and much more you can explore while visiting Snæfellsnes.

Reykjavík (Iceland) on a budget

Iceland the most beautiful country  in the world I went to Iceland with a friend to do a workcamp on a sustainable farm, close to Reykjavík. To explore the city we got there a few days before the camp started. Because we are students and broke I have some tips for you to save money on your accomodation. But before I start with this I just want to tell you even if you  just thought about going to Iceland for a second: DO IT! It is really the most beautiful country I have ever been to and even if it is a little expensive to get there it will be more than worth it.

Reykjadalur Hot Springs: An Icy Winter Hike

In the past few years, travel through Iceland has spiked. Adventures from all over the globe have come to see the green summers and waterfalls as well as the icy winters and geothermal hot springs. This wide range of attractions has earned Iceland the reputation for being “the land of fire and ice.” When some friends and I hiked to Reykjadalur Hot Springs in December, 2017, the beautiful land truly lived up to its name.

Reykjavik: A few days in this cool little city

It seems international travel to Iceland has soared in the past few years. Perhaps it’s because IcelandAir offers a 7-day stop over for no additional airline cost, and because it’s conveniently located between Europe and The States/Canada. Or maybe, people have just started to realize how cool this little country actually is.

Iceland - A Frozen Adventure Playground

Iceland is very quickly becoming one of the trendiest places to visit in Europe, and with very good reason. This up-and-coming tourist destination was described to me by a native Icelander during my visit as “just like New Zealand without steroids.” Now firstly, if you want a mental picture of this Icelander, just think of a towering Viking warrior and you’re pretty much there, an image that goes for a lot of the population actually. And secondly, as a Kiwi myself this was a humbling statement to hear, but also something I have to admit I disagree with somewhat. Iceland has no need for steroids, it is simply perfect exactly as it is.
