Top 5 Reasons to Visit Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a small country located in Central America. Known for having an incredible variety of wildlife and great waves for surfing.            Receiving millions of tourists from all over the world every year.  It is not surprising that you might be interested in learning more about this beautiful country, what it has to offer or you might even be thinking about visiting it someday.  So, here are my personal top 5 reasons to visit Costa Rica.

Katherine Ramirez

Tortuguero, Limon, Costa Rica

No roads can take you to Tortuguero, but a boat or a small plane will. A Traveler’s Memories Tortuguero, Limon, Costa Rica Two weeks before our trip we decided to book a tour that included bus and boat shuttles, lodging, three meals, tour in Tortuguero Canals, a short visit to Tortuguero town and a kayak trip. So, this is what we know so far about this place, Tortuguero National Park is a protected area located on Costa Rica’s northern Caribbean coast and it is full of wide open canals with a big variety of animal species like crocodiles, monkeys, birds, fishes and lizards.

Mariana

The university area

The most Eastern area is barrio San Pedro. Famous for its university and cheap bars. The campus is a green oasis with plants, a river and even sloths hidden in the trees. Close to the university is la Calle de la Amargura, aka the street of bitterness, with bars where students go to after class and one of the best places for affordable beers and food. If you are looking for more decent food go to El Candil, which is a few streets away from the university. They have many traditional dishes and it’s always packed during lunch time. Try their chifrijo, a typical dish with beans, pork, avocado, tomato and nacho chips, or olla de carne, a soup with yucca, beef and vegetables. If you’d rather have a sandwich check out La Pataconería. A 10-minute walk from the university where they have lots of variety. Their patacones (fried and smashed plantain bananas) are definitely worth trying and a popular snack throughout Latin America. You have probably noticed that the Costa Rican cuisine contains a lot of meat, but this doesn’t mean that they don’t have good vegetarian restaurants. In San Pedro you can find El Buho and Neshuma. Both have great options like vegan burgers, Mediterranean and Asian food, and healthy juices.

Arenal national park

Costa Rica is a country with many varying climates and landscapes. From the central valley, to monte verde the could forest, to the caribbean or pacific side beaches there is adventure to be found. The area around La Fortuna is amazing. There is the Arenal volcano and national park, a sustainable ranch and hotel called Rancho Margot and hydroelectric plant, all of which are important to Costa Rica. The Arenal Volcano is unique and when the volcano erupts rather than spewing lava it releases molten hot rocks, which leaves the surrounding area covered in volcanic rock. While hiking up the volcano is illegal due to the gas that if people get to close too will die. There is still many opportunities to hike around the volcano with a great view. On the first hike that I went on we saw three different snakes, two bright yellow ones who were curled up and hanging out on tree’s, and one brown one that was next to the trail in the leaves, that one was a jumping viper luckily we spotted it because they attack when treated.

Getting There

The Rio Celeste River is situated in the Tenorio Volcano National Park in the Northern Highlands region of Costa Rica (the province of Guanacaste), 50km from the town of Liberia and 160 km northwest of San Jose. There are two main entrances to the park – Bijagua and Guatuso. Guided tours run from La Fortuna for about $65 per person. If you have a rental car – driving to Rio Celeste is ideal – a mere 1.5 hr scenic drive through pineapple plantations and palm trees from La Fortuna. There are two ways to see this magical river. Firstly to visit the town of Rio Celeste – this incredible turquoise river runs through the town and you can enjoy its beauty free of charge.  Rio Celeste has a couple of options for accommodation such as The Rio Celeste Backpackers and the town itself is authentic, tiny and quaint devoid of much tourism. The banks of the river are lined with children and families enjoying the cool waters – a perfect way to immerse yourself in the local culture. This option, however doesn’t allow you to see the actual point where the two rivers meet and the water magically changes colour.  To see this you are required to pay $12 to enter Tenorio Volcano national park to enjoy the full experience including hot springs, the waterfall and the actual point where the river changes into its crazy iridescent blue colour.

Arriving at Monteverde

When 3 of us started our journey to Monteverde, I had no expectations. You know how good of a feeling it is when you are welcoming a world as it is with open hands? If you don’t, I am encouraging you to try it. As I am now rewinding the whole day I spent in Monteverde Cloud Forests, I am also encouraging you to visit it. We drove to Monteverde by car. It was a small off-road track, which was constantly going uphill, until we reached the height of almost 2 kilometers. The most important thing is that the road itself and the surroundings were already a great view. It took me one glance through the window to understand that we are about to witness the most amazing nature Costa Rica has to offer. And I can guarantee you that I have never been in a country with such a diverse and beautiful nature before. If I had any expectations, Monteverde would have had highly exceeded them.

The Caribbean coast differs from the other parts of Costa Rica because of the area’s Afro-Caribbean roots and Puerto Viejo doesn’t make an exception. This town has an interesting blend of Caribbean and Latino cultures and although it might sometimes (especially weekends) feel like a touristic party town, it still has some rustic and traditional fishing village charm.

Before Traveling to Costa Rica...

First of all, please keep in mind you are traveling to Central America, do not confuse Costa Rica with Puerto Rico. This is probably one of the most common mistakes tourist make when planning a trip, I have been in the tourism industry since 2010, and trust me you don’t want to book your flight to San Juan when you actually meant San José. Which brings me to another interesting point, San José Juan Santamaría Airport is the correct one, there is another airport called San José in California. (Yes I know this might sound crazy but it has happened).

The most amazing places to go here in Costa Rica.

I like to know my country because even though Costa Rica is a tiny country, it has a lot of diversity and many new places to visit. For those reasons, I never get tired of traveling inside my country. My question every day: Where can I go this weekend?

COSTA RICA: Central and Pacific Coast

We landed in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica at 03:00 am due to our flight being 6 hours delayed (yes, 6 hours, but 2 free airport meals as compensation). We took a cab to our hostel for that night (Hostel Bekuo) and finally got some rest. Our plan for the next few days was to get a rental car and roam around Costa Rica’s famous cloud forest.

The Food

There were an abundance of food places to eat, specifically Flip Flop which was located centrally in the town. The food was epic and the portions were ginormous. A delicious complimentary watermelon shot was handed out after dinner by the owner, a lovely German lady. She was so lovely that when a friend of mine realised he only had card to pay (the restaurant only takes cash) she let him owe her for dinner. Caribbean food was a favourite here, which is no surprise given that Puerto Viejo is situated on the Caribbean coast. I had my first taste of Patacones – smashed and fried Plantain. Them, combined with meat in Caribbean sauce and the obligatory beans and rice was just the best dinner. Lidia’s Place, was another good restaurant located towards the back end of town, this family run restaurant had a delectable chilli sauce which was exactly the right amount of heat and flavour to keep you going back for more. If the rest of Puerto Viejo wasn’t enough to tempt you back, the tingling in your tastebuds will certainly be enough to make your stomach want to return to Costa Rica!

Peninsula de Osa: Costa Rica

The summer of 2007 was the first time I made it to Peninsula de Osa, before Instagram was popular (maybe it didn’t even exist at the time) and before the #wanderlust boom took over the world. It was also before the Costa Rican government fixed the main road to get there.
