Salvador & Morro de São Paulo
My short stay in Morro was already coming to an end, although it wasn’t as picture perfect as I had hoped, it was still a nice stay. The next day I got back onto the two hour boat trip, returning to Salvador. One hour into the boat trip, I heard a funny noise coming from below and then all of a sudden the boat had stopped. This isn’t really happening, is it? I thought to myself I looked around and cringed while I was surrounded by people vomiting and waves crashing into the boat. We had broken down, in the middle of the ocean. A boat in the distance was approaching, and I thought to myself, good were going to get some help, instead the captain simply through our captain a few beers and happily waved and smiled as he kept going towards the land. After an hour or so of fiddling with tools and sipping on beers down below, the boat we had finally started to move again. I’m going to make it off this boat! I thought, my excitement to reach land had kicked in. Once arriving in Salvdor I headed to Havels house, a person I had met on my plane trip from Australia – to Brazil. He was kind enough to offer me a place to stay at his family home in Salvador, so it was back to Havels house for a few days. ?Rachel Cornish
Art and Culture
Instituto Tomie Ohtake, an homage to the artist, is another must-see. The institute often brings high-profile exhibitions to the city, including the works of Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, and Joao Miró. Remember that Sao Paulo is a city of millions and visiting museums and galleries is best done inside of office hours – if not you may never get past the line.emily-murdock
How to get there?
Although Rio de Janeiro might be your destination, it is worth keeping an eye on flights to São Paulo and Salvador de Bahia. Domestic flights in Brazil are quite cheap, so you can fly from São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro for 30 euros. Yes, it is also possible to take the bus, but the price difference between plane and bus tickets is not so big. Actually taking the bus can be a bit dangerous, because time to time, tourists are being robbed there. In addition, Rio’s domestic airport is closer to the centre than the bus station.Liina
