Things to see and do while backpacking in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

Check out tips from other travellers and bloggers and their experiences in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

If you're already planning to visit Rio De Janeiro, Brazil - scroll to the next section for a list of the best places to stay.

The nightlife of Belo Horizonte

I would like to point out that BH has one of the best Carnivals in Brazil. Rio de Janeiro is known worldwide for it’s Carnival, but it has grown so much that for me it has become too big if you know what I mean. In Belo Horizonte Carnival has lots of street bands and isn’t that big so you can enjoy it more. I mean you can actually get near the “blocos” and have space to dance.

Top 4 hints and tricks to help you save money on plane tickets in South America

Having selected to visit Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia in 3 months, I began my scout for cheap flights and discovered a few hints and tricks that will hopefully help a fellow traveller out. Top 4 hints and tricks to help you save money on plane tickets in South America It goes without saying, but booking in advance seriously pays off. Yes, it means you have to be slightly more organised and know where you want to be when. But if you’re making the effort to read this, you’re probably the kind of person that looks forward to organising a trip, so getting sorted early with your itinerary shouldn’t be too much of a hassle. I recommend booking flights as early as 6 months out to nab the cheapest prices. But in reality, anything up to 2 months in advance puts you in good stead. Also, make sure luggage is included! There is nothing worse then buying a cheap, non-refundable ticket and realising it doesn’t include bringing along your precious cargo. Book domestic flights where possible rather than international flights in SA, even if they get you a short bus ride away from your destination. Airlines in South America are most cost effective when you fly within the geographical confines of one country. I discovered this when looking to purchase a flight from Rio De Janeiro in Brazil to Bogota in Colombia. This is not something you want to do by bus, unless you work it into your trip and do quite a few stops along the way. A bus trip would see you spending a solid 5 days (minimum) on the road, whereas a flight can be done in a day. Having looked at flights that included several stop overs and cost over $750 AUD, I trawled through the net to find first hand travel advice in search of a cheaper, more comfortable way to do it. Lucky for me I found an option that seemed pretty painless and set me back a total of $350 AUD for the trip. How did I do it? Well, keeping in line with searching for domestic flights where possible, I booked with Azul (a Brazilian budget airline) for a flight between Rio and Tabatinga, a town on the Amazon River in very close proximity to the Colombian border. I then booked a flight from Leticia, a Colombian town 7km away from Tabatinga, to Bogota. It is worth noting that this second leg of the journey was purchased as a return ticket, as I could use this to get back to Peru. Thanks to the this return ticket back to Leticia, I only needed to sort out a fast ferry (12hrs) to Iquitos in Peru and a domestic flight from Iquitos to get me to Lima. I highly recommend this for travellers who do not wish to bus from Cartagena or Bogota to Peru, which takes a minimum of 72hrs. Even though it sounds non-logical, always search for return domestic and international flights within South America, even if you are only making a single journey. Why? Because more often then not a return ticket is cheaper than a one-way ticket. It seems bizarre and I don’t fully understand it, but I recently encountered this when looking for a flight to take me from Calama, just near San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile, to Santiago. I found it crazy that the search results yielded prices of around $450-700 AUD for a 2hr domestic journey. So, out of sheer curiosity, I searched for a return trip in the full knowledge that I would not use, or even be in the country for, the return flight. The search revealed return prices around the $260 AUD mark. Winning! My final tip is to always check with the airline’s own website before booking through a third party. I often begin by searching for a flight on Skyscanner, Kayak and Expedia, and whilst I have found that buying through third party websites like BravoFly can yield cheaper results, I always double check and compare with the airline’s own website. This is to ensure that I am receiving the best price and not absorbing the third party’s commission. Airline options in South America To end, here is a list of some airline carriers (by country) worth checking out for your domestic and international flights in South America:

Not so common destinations: Brazil's underrated cities

What is the first image that crosses your mind when you think about Brazil? Maybe the paradisiac beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana, or the astonishing landscapes in Corcovado Mountain, or even the luminous skyscrapers of the Brazilian city that never sleeps, São Paulo? If that’s so, I understand. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are the two most famous Brazilian cities around the world and they have a reason to be that famous: both are breathtaking and so much fun! Foreigners often come looking for one of these places to go, as they match every expectation brought by that first image that pops up into someone’s head when they think about Brazil. However, what most of them don’t know is that Brazil has a lot more to offer. There are other Brazilian cities, not so common destinations for foreigners, but common places of tourism for locals, that offer as much fun and wonderful experiences as Rio and Sampa – sometimes even cheaper experiences! — and are often ignored.

Ilhabela on a Weekend

Ilhabela is one of the stops along the “green coast route” (Costa Verde, in Portuguese), a route shared by the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, famous for its mountains covered in the remaining parts of the rainforest, as well as its long beaches and amazing tracks. This island, located just across the city of São Sebastião, is more than just its beaches. Full of nature, great food, incredible sights and gorgeous beaches, the small city of Ilhabela (literally translated as “beautiful island”) has lots of great experiences to offer to its tourists. As a frequent visitor of this island, I do admit that 2 days are not enough to explore all its beauty, but, for those looking for a weekend escape or a quick overview of the island, you can find below good suggestions to get to know a little bit of this incredible place. How to get there Getting there is pretty simple. If your driving along the Green Coast Road, you will find that one of its cities is São Sebastião. The city has signs indicating the ferry that takes you to Ilhabela. If you decide to take your car into the island, it costs around USD 8, but if your crossing by foot, it’s free. If you’re coming from the city of São Paulo, you can take the bus at “Terminal Rodoviario Tiete” (TRT), where busses are leaving every 2 hours. Both busses to São Sebastião and Ilhabela cost around USD 20 and end up by the ferry, and from there, you can simply cross by foot. Once you’re on the other side, you can either get a cab or a bus. Getting around  Using the public transportation inside the island is very simple. Busses go South (Borrifos) or North (Armação) and all beaches are along this route. you can hop on any of these busses and hop out once you get to the beach you’d like to visit. It’s also very easy and safe to ride a bike. And you can rent it on some shops like Maremar   Beaches you can visit around town Now that you know how to go to places, it’s crucial to tell you which places to go. Bellow, I’m describing a few interesting beaches to go. These are my favorites, but of course, any place you go will be pretty interesting, safe and with great things to do. One of the busiest beaches of the island is called Curral beach. There are some beach clubs along it, and some nice restaurants to have beers and some snacks. A cool beach for sports lovers is the Perequê beach. people can enjoy paddling, as well as playing beach volley, kayak and sailing. One cool thing about this beach is that it’s pretty close to the city so, during summer, you can easily stumble into concerts and parties promoted by the city. Viana is one of those tiny beaches with a great (but a little expensive) restaurant. Perfect to enjoy the sunsets and quite close to the center, where bars, stores and restaurants are. Finally, if you’re into sports, you can visit Armação, a beach up north, where the wind blows strongly. You’ll find nice bars by the beach, as well as kitesurfers, windsurfers and schools to teach you some of these water sports. If you are adventurous… As I said before, there’s more than just beaches along Ilhabela’s coast. Its tracks and waterfalls are also a must go to if you’re into nature and adventures. Particularly, option number for a day trip is to go to Bonete beach. It’s is a rather long trip, that takes you to one of the most beautiful beaches of the island.

The Magic of Florianopolis

Every time I hear about Brazil, the major cities that come to my mind are Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. I went to the previous two cities and they are so distinctly beautiful and alive.

A Captivating Paradise: Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

There are many adjectives one can use when they think of Rio De Janeiro – radiant, beautiful, otherworldly – the list could go on and on. Rio is home to one of the modern wonders of the world, and beaches that stretch for miles and pique interest all over the world. If someone in the western world hasn’t heard of Copacabana, the chances are they’ve been living in a hole. However, it is important to remember that while paradise is only steps away in this city, it is also wonderfully rich in culture, in history, and in the people that dwell here.

Rio on a budget

Rio de Janeiro is one of my favorite places in the world. Oh no, wait, it IS my favorite place in the world! Over the past two years I have been trying to spend as much time in this city as possible. As we all know, travelling can be expensive, especially in big cities. It is, however, perfectly possible to have a splendid time in this marvelous city without going broke.

The other side of Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de janeiro is one of the most visited city around the globe, and in 2014, was pretty much in evidence because of the FIFA World Cup. What many tourists don’t know is the other side of the city, the “Brazilian Miami” as some foreign friends called.
