Fish & marine wildlife in general: Great Barrier Reef

The largest living organism on earth, The Great Barrier Reef, is the ultimate place to explore Australia’s underwater wildlife. Whether you prefer snorkelling or scuba diving, there is a good chance to experience close encounters with some of the marine park’s many colourful residents. The Great Barrier Reef is huge. A daytrip will take you out to the inner reef while a 2 or 3 days trip will give you a chance explore the picturesque outer reef as well. A number of different companies do trips out on the reef. Boats depart daily from Airlie Beach, Cairns and Port Douglas among others and there is indeed a trip for everyone – whether you are on a budget, looking for a luxury cruise, just want to snorkel or are a keen scuba diver.

Cairns Tour

Unlike Brisbane winters, at least the sun didn’t set by five. So, we had plenty of daylight even after lunchtime to get our hungover selves out and touring around the town again. Considering the touristy things to do in Cairns, there are ample options to choose from; the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Cableway, Port Douglas and the list goes on! It wouldn’t be surprising if one also sits to calculate the amount you spend on each attraction. So, we decided to do it differently, we drove through it all! I guess when you don’t have a plan is when you can do things the best! We rented a car right opposite our hostel and drove our way through sunset to see Kuranda, which was a splendid experience as we got a glimpse of the whole town from the viewpoint above and we didn’t really take the train or the cableway, and it was worth it. We drove through the forest and I would make a suggestion, try not to drive there after sundown, because you might get lost or you may come across some animals right from the forest and without street lights up there, it may not be such a good idea! Trust me, it is from experience!

Experience Cairns, Far North QLD

The next thing to do while you’re in Cairns is travel up to Port Douglas (about an hour drive), if you don’t have a car then take a bus. The road to Port Douglas hugs the shoreline, on one side of the road is rainforest and on the other is the ocean which is as beautiful as it sounds, especially on a clear day. It really is a worthwhile drive, Port Douglas is a chilled out little beach town that has some really nice lookouts, shops and places to eat.

Australia: from Cairns to Cape Tribulation in just one day

During one of my days off, I decided to leave Cairns and to reach the famous Cape Tribulation. If you have more than one day you can also decide to reach Cape Tribulation in 2 or 3 days, stopping for the night in Port Douglas or in the rainforest and giving yourself more time to enjoy what this trip has to offer.
