Why Essaouira, Morocco is a photography paradise

Essaouira, Morocco is located on the coast between Casablanca and Agadir but is nothing like the two. With roughly 70.000 inhabitants, Essaouira is significantly smaller than its neighbors. Nevertheless, I would choose it over the others any day. Why? Because Essaouira is one of the most photogenetic places I have visited Morocco.

What to see in Essaouira

Strolling through the narrow streets and alleys of the old town or medina, as the Moroccans call it, is a treat to your senses in every way. Everything within the old fortress walls feels like a few steps back in time. Old and worn out buildings, the big traditional market and the small but lively harbor provide plenty to discover. Essaouira is a museum on itself. Since the medina is not that big, it won’t be easy to get lost but, I suggest you give it a try. There is plenty to see around every corner.

The best sunset photos

If you’re a sucker for sunsets, Morocco is the place to be. So why Essaouira in particular? The old part of town is surrounded by century-old castle walls. These walls used to protect the city against invaders from all directions. Nowadays, you can invade the fortress yourself. Climb upon the impenetrable walls and shoot that sunset over the harbor and the city itself.

Architecture, markets, and locals

There are beautiful places to be found in every street of the old medina. Women who spend their days making traditional argan oil and salesmen exhibiting hand-made ceramic plates on their hundred-year-old wooden shop doors. Hotel signs and handcrafted Berber jewelry decorate the streets. Just a fair warning before you start pointing your camera at everyone and everything though. The Moroccan women and shop owners might not always appreciate it if you start taking photos from them. Try and have a talk first and have a look at the goods they are selling. Most of it is even worth a purchase since all of it is hand-made. Doing this makes the locals more willing to give you that picture and you might even get a smile back.

Where to stay in Essaouira

In order to get those perfect pictures for your Instagram story, you want to be close to the magical places. The old medina is by far the best place to be in Essaouira and to be honest, outside those city walls, there’s not a whole lot to see. South of the medina, just outside its gates is a beach that’s worth a visit. This is also the place to find a few bigger and more luxurious hotels. The old town is too small for this kind of accommodations but, if you don’t mind living on a budget like myself, I would definitely recommend one of the cozy hostels within the city walls.

Tips for staying in Essaouira

You don’t need a big, expensive camera to make great photos in Essaouira. Just a phone and a walk around will do the trick. If you get the chance to visit Essaouira, don’t forget to visit the big town square during sunset. This is probably the best place to chill and get your desired photo results.

Hello, my name is Dennis. I'm a full-time traveler/adventurer by trade. Some time ago, I gave up my "normal life" to discover more of the world and all the beauty in it. I've been traveling for a while now and every now and then I settle down somewhere (anywhere but home) to get to know a place better and to make some money along the way. My other passion, next to traveling, is writing. I love to share my stories and experiences with other people and at the moment, i'm actually working on a travel/ writing social media platform myself which hopefully will be online soon.
