Top Tourist Spots in Guimaras, Philippines
Let us discover the hidden treasures of Guimaras and the reason why it tagged itself as the Island that Fits your Taste. Here are some of the few places you will really love about Guimaras.
Guimaras is an island in the Philippines located in Panay Gulf in the western part of the Visayas Region. It was formally known as Himal-us and was a sub-province of Iloilo before it became an independent province on May 22, 1992. Since then, it is formally called as the Province of Guimaras. The province is rich with natural resources and its world-class mangoes. As a matter of fact, the province has the sweetest mangoes around the country and it has been exporting mangoes all around the world. Since mangoes are the main produce of the province, different mango delicacies and dishes has been served in the province which includes mango pizza, mango ketchup, dried mangoes, mango piaya, among others.
In the year 1993, the first Guimaras festival commence in celebration and thanksgiving for its bountiful harvest of sweet mangoes that had helped the economy of the province. The festival is known as the Manggahan Festival which is celebrated every month of mid-April to May. The celebration includes street parade, mango-eat-all-you-can, sports events, cultural and agricultural exhibits, fireworks competition, and many more. This competition has lured many tourists in the province to join in the festive event.
Besides it sweet mangoes, Guimaras is also known for its white sand beaches that attracts people around the world. The province is also rich in marine and cultural resources that is worth the visit.
How to Get to Guimaras Province?
There are only two ways on how to get to the province, its either going from Iloilo City or from Pulupandan in Negros Occidental. If you are coming from Manila, the easiest way is flying straight to Iloilo City then ride a public transport to the Ortiz Wharf. From the Ortiz Wharf, ride a pump boat which would take up to 20 minutes to the Jordan Wharf in the Guimaras. If you go from Bacolod City Airport in the Negros Island, you need to ride a public jeepney to Pulupandan RoRo Wharf and ride a boat going to the Sebaste Wharf in Guimaras which would take up to an hour.
Alobijod Beach Resorts
Alobijod Beach Resorts is located in Brgy Alobijod, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras and consist of three different resorts – the Raymen’s, Rico’s, and the Alobijod Cove Resorts. Each of these resorts is managed by different private companies and offers different services. The beach is famous for its white sand and crystal clear water. The resorts also offer island hopping to different islets nearby which includes snorkeling. Hotel and cottages rate ranges from P800-P5000 per night.
Going to Alobijod is easy, from Jordan Wharf, just ride a Nueva Valencia jeepney, this will pass you to the Alobijod-Nueva Valencia Crossing. Just get off from there and ride a tricycle to Alobijod. The total travel time could only take up at least an hour.
The Guimaras Magic Island
Magic Island is an islet located in southern part of the province in Brgy Lucmayan, Nueva Valencia Guimaras. It is a resort on top of a small islet and also offers relaxing and cool beach. According to the old folks in the province, the islet was called the Magic Island because it was known to disappear during high tides. Room rates ranges from P3000 to P6000 for an overnight stay per room.
To get to the Magic Island Resort, just ride a van going to Lucmayan in Nueva Valencia which would take at least an hour and a half up to 2 hours. Once you get there, just ride a boat going to the Magic Island Resort.
The Balaan Bukid Shrine
Balaan Bukid, local term for the Holy Mountain is located in Brgy Hoskyn, Jordan, Guimaras and a popular destination for tourist during the Lenten season. The huge cross is the most popular landmark of the mountain that can be seen in the city of Iloilo. On your way to the top of the mountain, you will pass by the thirteen stations of the cross. Once you get to the top, you will get an amazing view of the giant cross and a catholic church. On the other side, you will see an overlooking view of the city of Iloilo. During the Holy Week, the place is a setting for the Senakulo, the play of Jesus’ Crucifixion.
To get to the Balaan Bukid, just ride a tricycle to Brgy Hoskyn, a 15-minute ride from the Jordan Wharf. You will have to walk to get to the top of the mountain which would take you up to 20 minutes walking time.
The Trapist Monastery
The Trapist Monastery is located in Brgy San Miguel near the center of the province. The Monastery is the place of the monks in the province and is a good place to visit for relaxation and meditation. It is also a perfect place for a religious and spiritual gathering. They also produce their own mango products and some souvenirs.
To get to the Trappist Monastery, just ride a jeepney from Jordan Wharf going to the Alibhon, San Miguel and then ride a tricycle to the Trappist Monastery. Travel time could take up to 30 minutes.
Cabaling Beach Resort
Cabaling Beach Resort is located in Brgy Espinosa, Jordan, Guimaras and a perfect gateway for foreign visitors. The resort was just recently developed and offers a pool by the sea experience. The special feature of the pool is its use of the sea water rather than tap water. Room and cottages rate ranges from P2000 to P6000 for an overnight stay per room. Special services include island hopping to nearest islets and snorkeling.
To get to Cabaling Beach Resort, ride a jeepney to Alibhon, San Miguel, then ride a jeepney (available only twice a day) or a motorcycle to Cabaling, Espinosa. Total travel time would take up to an hour.
Guimaras Mountain Resort
Guimaras Mountain Resort is located in Piña-Daragan, Buenavista, Guimaras and is a new destination in the province. The resort offers a great getaway for bonding and gathering with friends and family away from the city. Room rates ranges fro P600-P2000 for an overnight stay per room.
To get to Guimaras Mountain Resort from Jordan Wharf, ride a jeepney to Alibhon, San Miguel then ride another jeepney to Piña-Daragan. Another route is by going directly to Buenavista Wharf by riding a motor banca in Parola Wharf in Iloilo City rather than in Ortiz Wharf.
