Iligan City: City of Majestic Waterfalls

Iligan City, located at the northern part of the southern part of Philippines. It is nicknamed as “The City of Majestic Waterfalls”. There are more than 20 waterfalls in the city and that explains why it’s called as is. Though they are not all easy to access, they are all worth to be seen. Join me as I reveal one of the majestic waterfalls and be amazed.

What’s with the name?

TINAGO FALLS. In Filipino, “tinago” means hidden. We also usually call hidden treasures and facts as “tinago”.

Tinago Falls is one of the most visited waterfalls of the city.

Then why is this waterfalls called “hidden”?

How to get there?

Tinago Falls can be accessed through two different towns. One from Buru-un, and the other from Linamon. But I suggest to take the Linamon-route. It is easier there. You can reach there by bus with destinations of “Ozamis or Mukas” if you are from Cagayan de Oro City or from the Laguindingan airport. Take off at the Linamon market. Or if you like to take the Buru-un route, which is the town before Linamon when you are from the city proper of Iligan, take off at the Buru-un market. From there, there are motorcycles going up to the entrance of the waterfalls. The fare for the motorcycle is between Php 75 to Php 100. But if you are with your friends, it would be easier if you have your private vehicle. There are many signs leading you to the waterfalls. The entrance fee is Php 25. You can also rent for a life jacket for Php 20.

From the entrance, you need to go down into a 500-steps winding staircase to reach and see the wonderful hidden Tinago Falls. It is always best to take a rest every after few steps and observe the nature, and of course to avoid muscle cramps. Now this explains its ncas of being hidden. But, indeed a wonderful treasure.

Be Amazed!

The cold water falls at a height of almost 240 ft into the deep blue-green water pool. They said that the water is also as deep as the height of the waterfalls, but who knows. It looks scary, but it is in fact very fun. Don’t hesitate and get scared to swim and plunge into the waters! It would be more fun as you thought it would be.

To go to the foot of the waterfalls, there is a bamboo raft which adds to the adventure. You just have to pay for Php 10 each person. The whole group must pull the rope to reach the waterfalls. (This is why travelling with the group is advised ?). Feel the excitement of adventure and teamwork in this part. Lack of strength won’t get you there.

There is also a small cave at the side which you can access only by swimming. It is nearer to swim from the side of the pool, which is on the left side when facing the falls. However, we prefer swimming from the foot of the falls to the cave, jumping from the bamboo raft. Tip: It is more exciting that way!

The cave

The cave

The cave is just a small rock indention. I don’t know why it’s there, but for me, it gives you a resting place when you get tired of swimming in that very wide swimming pool.

If you love to jump into the deep water or dive, climb up to the rocks. This will make your visit more adventurous. But don’t forget to take safety precautions!

Bring your friends

There are cottages called “Buko Shade” because of its coconut shape. In Filipino, “buko” means coconut. Literally, the cottage look like a coconut which is green in color outside and white color inside. This is good for bigger groups. The rent is Php 150 to Php 200.

There are also tables and benches which are best for small groups. Some other guests prefer to rent these because it is open, since it has no roof, and you can see the waterfalls  and the nature while sitting or eating. The rent is from Php 50 to Php 100.

Don’t forget to bring your own food and drinks in going there. There are no canteens and stores down there. And most importantly, don’t forget your friends!

They said that adventure is fun when you are with the people close to your heart.

It may be far and tiring but it is worth the visit. When you visit Iligan City, don’t miss this majestic waterfalls of TINAGO and be amazed.

Join me on my next adventure! Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it.
