We started our train journey from Chennai, got down at Ernakulam station as we had booked travel package for 3 days which provides us the cab pick and drop facility from the railway station. From Ernakulam station, it took almost 3 hours for us to reach Munnar which is located in the Idukki district of Kerala, a southern state of India on the western ghats mountain range covering an area of 1600 meter and 5200 feet from the sea level.

After 3 hours of travel, we finally reached our resort “Igloo nature resort”. I recommend this resort for those who want to visit Munnar as it very economical and friendly staff along with well-maintained rooms with an extraordinary view from the porch. After refreshing ourselves, we started our tour to explore the places to visit in Munnar.

Rose Garden:

It is a photogenic place with different varieties of flowers and plants. You can find different varieties of roses which we do not generally see in India. We were astounded with the beauty of this place. I recommend you to visit this scenic beauty and enjoy the beauty of different species of roses.

Tea estate view:

On the way from the rose garden, we halted near the beautiful photographic spot near tea estate where most of the tourists stop here to take a photo even we took a few photos of us and the tea estate. Tourists are not allowed to enter the tea estate, may take the photos outside the fence. The beauty will capture you and make you speechless, everywhere greenery and the entire hill slope is covered with tea plants. If you are planning on a vacation to Munnar should visit this place and take photos and enjoy the beauty here.

Mattupetty Dam:

The next place we visited is the Mattupetty dam which is one of the places to visit in Munnar. The main attraction here is the view of the dam on the Kundale river and the boat ride in the river. Reach this place before 4.30 pm after that you can’t go for a boat ride. Some times they stop rides if tides are heavy for the safety of the citizens. You can select any boat based on the number of people. We took a speed boat and the ride went for 15 minutes.

Near to this dam, there is a lake which makes you mesmerized with its beauty, on the way to this lake you find street shops with snacks and homemade chocolates at a reasonable cost. You need to take an entry ticket for this place and for boat ride separately, the entry fee is very stingy. We didn’t go for the boat ride here but took photos and enjoyed the natural beauty by staying there for a long time. And bought a few herbal oils and homemade chocolates. The dam and the entry to the lakeside will close after 6 PM as elephant herd will come here to have water during the night time.

Night at Munnar:

Night time will be extremely cold so I suggest you to carry clothes to keep you warm. We visited Munnar in December and it was very cold after 7.30 or 8 PM.Dinner was delivered to our room as per order and which was very tasty. You may not need to go out for dinner.

Jeep safari:

Next day, we went for a Jeep safari and the total ride time was 4 hours. The ride will be in a rural forest area and on the way to the forest we came across an old bridge built by Britishers. We got down on the bridge to see the view. Next, we went to a dam where we are not allowed to get down they just stop here a few minutes. Later they took to a lake surrounded by forest which a scenic beauty and the next stop was a hill peak from where you can see the entire Munnar. We spent some time there enjoying the valley view from the hilltop.

If you are an adventurous person, the night safari is a good option wherein they take you into the forest to see wild animals especially elephant herd. Apart from this, there will be mountain vehicles which take you to ride on mountain slopes.

Tata tea plantation:

After Jeep safari,  the next place we visited in Munnar was the Tata tea plantation, where they will explain the process of tea powder making in an elaborate manner. If you’re a tea lover then you must visit this place.

Kalari Fight :

Evening we visited Kalari fight, which is one of the oldest martial art in the world, still continuing from many centuries. Kalari was worth watching as the talent displayed by the participants make you forget your surrounding.

Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary :

Next day we visited Chinnar wildlife sanctuary which is a unique protected area on the eastern slope of western ghats. If you are a nature lover then you will fall in love with this place. We hired a tour guide he explained to us about the sanctuary. People who are interested in trekking can go for trekking. Apart from wildlife and trekking, it is a well-known repository of medicinal herbs.

Elephant ride and spice garden:

On the way back to Cochin, we went for an Elephant ride which was an awesome experience. I recommend visiting this place in Munnar which was fun and at the same time thrilling experience. Spice garden will be an educational kind of place where they will explain about the different kinds of medicinal herbs and spices which we use. There is a shop near to spice garden to buy spices.

Summing- up:

Munnar is a beautiful place for relaxing and surrendering your self to nature especially during the winter season. You can visit Munnar entire year. However, during monsoon, you may not visit all the places but you can enjoy the weather and scenic beauty. Enjoy yourself by visiting the above-mentioned places in Munnar along with your family or friends. Have a lovely vacation by visiting God’s own country(Kerala).
