Mahabaleshwar is one of the most common places for weekend getaways for people living in the Western part of India. At an elevation of around 1300 meters, this hill station is a perfect way to beat the scorching heat of nearby cities, including, Mumbai and Pune, and even a few cities of Gujarat. I visited Mahabaleshwar for a single day, but I’d highly recommend 3-4 days in the city to thoroughly enjoy it as well as see the numerous viewpoints that you can find throughout the city. So, I tried to fit in as much as I could in a single day and here is my personalized list of the top places to see in Mahabaleshwar if you too have time constraints.
Mahabaleshwar is also known as the Strawberry city because of the ample strawberry fruit that grows here. Mapro, a known squash brand, had its manufacturing unit in the Guneghar village of Panchgani, a neighboring town of Mahableshwar. It now also serves as a leisure garden and restaurant. You can enjoy a hearty breakfast with a view of strawberry plantations and Sahyadri mountain range. There is also a shop inside the garden premises, from where you can buy edible souvenirs, that include, different varieties of jams, squashes, chocolates, and much more!
Right opposite to the Mapro gardens hidden behind strawberry hawkers, starts a simple trek to Triveni point. The trek passes through the forests with a gradual increase in slope and after about a 15-minute walk, you will be welcomed by a 360-degree panoramic view of the hills surrounding the beautiful water bodies. The view from the top is astounding that you wouldn’t normally expect from an easy level trek.
Around 25 km from Mahabaleshwar city, Tapola Dam is a complete treat to the eyes. The best part of visiting Tapola Dam though is the scenic roads, that pass through forests and cross tiny local villages. There are many viewpoints on the way too that give a crazy top view of the dam and Sahyadri mountain range. As you reach the dam, you’ll see an old quaint village and a few quiet shops offering tea and snacks. You can spend time picnicking by the water or boating in the water. With its clear blue water, Tapola Dam is very pleasing to the eyes and you can easily spend a few hours by it.
There are for sure many points in Mahabaleshwar to watch the sun go down the magnificent valleys. But, Bombay point is one of the most famous viewpoints amongst the tourists visiting the city. And if you are a fan of sunsets, this is one place you can definitely visit. Being very close to the Mahabaleshwar city center, there is no hassle of driving back in the night too. But since it is a major attraction, the place is usually very crowded, and if you are looking for quieter viewpoints, Triveni point is definitely a very good option too, you just need to carry the right gear for hiking down.
