Ever since I visited Novi Sad for the first time back in 2007, I knew this would be the city I would like to live in the future. That is why I decided to come here for my studies in 2011, and I stayed here since then. Novi Sad is a great place to visit because it has a lot of interesting things going on all over the city. In this article, I am going to provide recommendations for the tourists who decide to come to Novi Sad. From my personal experience, these are the things and the places you shouldn’t miss when you come!

Novi Sad – City Center

Basic information about Novi Sad

But first, let me tell you something about this wonderful city. Novi Sad is the second-largest city in Serbia and the capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. The city is lying on the banks of the Danube river. Novi Sad was founded in 1694 and over time it has become a center of Serbian culture, gaining the nickname Serbian Athens. Novi Sad is going to be a European Capital of Culture in 2021.

Places to visit in Novi Sad

Petrovaradin Fortress

Petrovaradin Fortress

One of the most famous sites in Novi Sad is Petrovaradin Fortress. When you enter the gates of it, you will have the feeling as if you were returned to the past. You can walk around the walls of the Fortress and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Moreover, you can see the entire city underneath! One of the landmarks of the Fortress is the Clock Tower, which is very interesting because the minute and hour hand on the clock are reversed, so the small hand is showing minutes, and the big one is showing hours. This helped the farmers in the fields and fishermen on the river to be able to see time from a long distance. For all fans of music festivals, if you come to Fortress at the beginning of July, you can attend one of the biggest festivals in Europe, the Exit Festival.

Clock Tower

Dunavski park (Danube Park)

Danube Park

Danube Park is an urban park in the downtown of Novi Sad and it has been known as one of the symbols of the city. In the center of the Park, there is a small, but beautiful lake, and if you visit Novi Sad in spring or summer, you will be lucky to see two of its most famous inhabitants – a couple of swans called Isa and Bisa. However, during winter, Danube Park becomes an ice skating rink called Ice Forrest, so if you like this sport, you can enjoy ice skating around this beautiful park.

Restaurants in Novi Sad

Wherever you go, at one moment you will be hungry. Every city has some of its well-known restaurants, and so does Novi Sad.

Pizzeria Ciao

Pizzeria Ciao

If you like pizza, my recommendation would be Pizzeria Ciao, which has the best pizza in town. Although pizza is not a traditional Serbian food, Serbian pizza is much more different than the original Italian version, and if you are a vegetarian, don’t worry – a Vegetarian Pizza in Ciao is also delicious!

Restaurant Veliki

Restaurant Veliki

However, if you want to try some of the traditional regional meals, then Restaurant Veliki (Veliki means Big in Serbian) is the right place for you. Dishes served here represent Vojvodina cuisine, people and their food habits. They serve Prekmurje pie, Debreziner sausage, Sacher cake, Hungarian stew, Strukle, Somloi guluske and many other meals you cannot try anywhere else in the world.

Shopping places in Novi Sad

Although there are several big shopping centers in Novi Sad, I would like to recommend two concept stores, because I think they are a much better choice if you want to buy something that is handmade, unique and designed by local designers.

Unikatni Kutak

Unikatni Kutak

Unique Corner (the name of the store in English) is a place that has a handful of accessories, such as earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets, but if you want to buy bow ties, badges, pins, bags, tote bags, or some clothes, you can also find them here. There are two good things about Unikatni Kutak. The first one is that it is located in the center of the city. The second one is that the prices are really affordable, so you can buy plenty of things, without spending a lot of money.

Misha Concept Store

Misha Concept Store

However, if you are looking for something at a higher aesthetic level, my recommendation is to visit Misha. This is a small, but luxurious store, where you can find elegant dresses, sophisticated jewelry and, believe it or not – huge decorative ceramic bugs for your wall!

Nightlife in Novi Sad

Many people who visit different countries and cities also like to experience the nightlife of it. Lucky for you, Novi Sad has a lot of different cafes and clubs to offer!

Laze Telečkog Street

This is the street where cafes and clubs are all over the place, one to the other. Most of them have a different style and different music, so the best thing about this street is that, when you enter one place and realize you don’t enjoy it, you can just move on to the next one! If you like pop, rock, disco or electronic music, you can find the right place for you in this street. Also, the entrance to all of these places is free, so you don’t have to think twice before entering any of the cafes here.

Club Museum

If you want to take clubbing to a higher level, then my recommendation would be to go to the Club Museum. It is located on the Petrovaradin Fortress, and you can have an experience of a real Serbian night out there. After midnight, you can hear popular turbo-folk music, which may sound strange at the beginning, but after a while, you will probably start dancing to it like everyone else, because it has a good beat.

As you can see, if you decide to visit Novi Sad, there will be a lot of different places to visit, so I am sure there is something for everyone here. Whenever you decide to come, the experience you get here will be wonderful!
