Hill Stations near Mumbai and Pune Cities in India

There are several hill stations near Mumbai and Pune cities in India. Do you want a quick vacation to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city? Well, there are a lot of options near the city. I have listed them down and briefly discussed each destination below.

Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani:


This is a popular destination for the holiday goers, especially from Mumbai and Pune city.
It is a five and a half hour drive from Mumbai city and three hours from Pune city. There are a lot of fun activities and adventure activities which can be enjoyed by all the age groups. There are local markets, theme parks, strawberry farms and temples. There are a lot of strawberry farms in Mahabaleshwar. The delicious strawberry cream and ice creams are served in every nook and corner of the place. Also, there is a lake where people mostly spend their evenings. They have a lot of activities near the lake like boating and horse riding Also there are many options for accommodation here.

Matheran:


Matheran is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station. No vehicles are allowed inside Matheran which makes the place unique and pollution free. It is approximately a two-hour drive from Mumbai and two and a half hour drive from Pune. There are train routes also available to reach here. The nearest station is Neral from where you can catch a cab or a toy train. There are a lot of monkeys in this area. It is a quiet hill station and the best place to relax with family and also couples. There is a lake,a local market and several scenic points to view the sunsets and photography.

Lonavala and Khandala:

 

This is a favorite destination among all the others for the tourists. This is a developed hill station with a lot of luxurious hotels, well-equipped theme parks, huge temples, several cafeteria and eateries, waterfall, adventure parks, Water parks, lake, scenic points, Wax museum, aquarium, local markets. It is just a one and a half hour drive from Mumbai and Pune. Chikki is a famous item sold in the local markets here. The local cuisine is Vada Pav and Misal Pav.
Tourists do come here all round the year as there are several activities for every season.

Malshej Ghat:

Malshej Ghat is a hidden gem. This is a not so popular destination among travelers. It is approximately a three and a half hour drive from Mumbai and Pune. People do come here especially in the monsoons to enjoy the waterfalls. But there are a few accidents that occurred in the past during the monsoons. So you have to be careful while driving the car. If you just want to relax amidst nature for a day or two, then this is the place. There are not many things to do except for a few temples, waterfalls and a dam. The roads for driving on the ghat are newly developed recently due to which it is a smooth drive up the hill.

Lavasa:


Lavasa is a privately planned city built up with a view to developing it as a metro city in the near future. But now it is known for a quick weekend getaway near the city. It is a four-hour drive from Mumbai and an hour’s drive from Pune. There are several luxurious hotel options here. They have a lake and the lakefront is full of activities, restaurants and cafeterias. You can visit this place during events and festivals. During such times the place becomes lively. There are famous celebrities who come and perform here during the events held here. Overall. It is a fun destination to spend a weekend.

Saputara:


Saputara is also a well-known hill station near Gujarat. It is a quiet hill station to relax. It is approximately five and a half hours drive from Mumbai and a six and a half hour drive from Pune. There are also several hotel accommodations available here for a good relaxed stay. As the place is located near Gujarat, you can also relish some of the Gujarati dishes in the restaurants. The hotels here are located amidst the hilly mountains and have beautiful scenic views from the rooms. You can just soak into nature and feel the fresh air while relaxing. There are several scenic points, gardens, a lake and temples. Overall it is a good weekend getaway for the holiday goers to relax and unwind themselves from the busy city life.

Igatpuri:


Igatpuri is another quiet destination for visitors to unwind themselves from their busy lives. It is a two-hour drive from Mumbai and a five- hour drive from Pune. This place is specially visited during the monsoons. The weather here is foggy and amazing during the monsoons. There are a few resorts to stay here which are beautifully located amidst the mountains. Manas resort is the oldest resort in Igatpuri. They are known for their hospitality and especially their petting zoo. They allow pets in their resort. They have some birds as pets inside the resort where you can enjoy watching them. Igatpuri also has a few waterfalls that can be visited during the monsoons. Overall, you can visit this place any time of the year for a relaxing vacation and also during the monsoons if you want to enjoy the waterfalls and the foggy weather.

Bhandardara:


This is a lesser known hill station located near Igatpuri. This place is known for its serene beauty of nature especially during the monsoons. This place is located amidst the beautiful mountains and is very scenic during the monsoons. There are a few options to stay in this place. People do visit this place during monsoons to enjoy the beautiful waterfalls and the weather. This place is also visited during the winter for the people who love camping. There are several visitors who come here for adventures like trekking and camping. This place has a beautiful lake, waterfalls and some scenic points for photography. Overall, this place is well known for its monsoons and also for camping during the winter.
