Riva del Garda is a charming city by the Garda Lake in the north of Italy.

It is known by its beautiful crystal water and by the incredible number of activities to do around like hiking, cycling, sailing and more.

Visitors come from all over the world to explore the amazing nature and energy of the place.
If you have checked pictures on the Internet and liked it, I can assure you that the beauty of it is nothing compared to what you see and feel once you are there! It is incredible how much there is to discover in Riva del Garda and the magic of the city.
If you have the opportunity to visit it, I highly recommend the experience!

What to do?

The city is small and beautiful and you can find many activities, which can all be done on foot.

Enjoy the City

One of the best parts to enjoy is the lovely view of the beach. While there, you may jump into the water, which is a bit cold, but crystal and very refreshing.

If you enjoy water sports, this is the right place for you!
Here you can find many different activities in the lake like sailing, kitesurf, windsurf, sup, canoeing…
If you don’t have your own equipment, don’t worry, you can rent it there easily.

For a cultural view of the city, you can visit the Museo Alto Garda (MAG) by the lake, which has different expositions and attractions. Shortly walking across the town center, you can appreciate the view from the top of the Apponale Tower.
Another interesting place to see is the Hydroelectric power plant, which was built in the 1920s. The visit is very interesting, especially if you are interested in the history of Riva del Garda. The visits and schedule depend on the season of the year. You can check online to be aware of time and prices to plan your trip.

Nature and adventures

The boat trip is a great choice If you want to get to know the lake and the cities around. It usually takes around 3h and stops in different cities, where you can spend some time walking and exploring the culture, the view, and Italian cuisine. There are many different routes and time schedules, so you can choose the one that suits you best.

If you want to adventure yourself you can go hiking in the surrounding area.
From the city, you can take a 1.5h hike to the top of the mountain and see the Santa Barbara Church. It is a beautiful trail with a panoramic view of the city from the top. The trail is not long, but a bit steep, so you should bring water and take your time to stop as many times as you like. In your way up, you will also find the Bastione, built in the early XVI century. Here, you can find a restaurant, from which you may appreciate the view while eating and resting. Continuing your journey to the top will still be rewarded!

Another option is to take the Ponale trail, surrounding the mountains and lake.
It is a beautiful path, which you can do on foot or by bicycle. It is longer than the other trail, taking up to 3 or 6h depending how far you want to walk, but the trail is not steep. You will walk on a path surrounding the lake, crossing some small tunnels and slowly going up the mountain. In each stop, you will be amazed by a different view. If you find small paths to take in the way, they are mostly taking you to an end, where you will find the perfect view at that moment. After registering and enjoying it, just go back to the main path and continue your journey. After approximately 2h of walking you can find a stop with a bathroom and a small place to grab a bite, however, this shop is not always open. In this case, is better if you bring with you some water and a few snacks for the trail, especially in the summer.

Where to eat?

The city center has a diversity of options to eat. Walking around you will find many places with different environments and prices. As you are in Italy, I recommend you try for sure some Pasta, Pizza and of course the amazing Ice cream!
You may also enjoy during the day or at night, to sit by the lake to eat or have a drink while enjoying the lovely view.

Where to stay?

There are many options of places to stay in Riva del Garda, from Hotels to Campings. I stayed at the Benacus hostel. It is cheap, but a comfortable option, very clean and organized and it has a great view.

How to get there?

Travel by car

You can take the road to Riva del Garda by car with a beautiful view.
The distance from Milano to Riva del Garda is about 3-4h depending on the route you take. The route from the west of the Lake Garda (A4/E70 motorway) is more direct, but if you want to travel a bit more around, for instance, stop in Verona and other cities surrounding the Lake Garda before you arrive at the final place, you can take the east road (A22/E45 motorway). From Venice is a shorter trip of around 2h.

Most of the streets in the city center of Riva del Garda are exclusive for pedestrians, so you might have to find a place to park your car and walk the rest, but don’t worry, it’s only a few blocks and its worth it.

Travel by Rail

The nearest railway station is at Rovereto city (20km). From Rovereto, you can take a bus to Riva del Garda. Check the routes and time schedule of trains and buses for the season and days you are planning to travel.
