Cyprus - beaches, mountains, two cultures and more
January 1, 1970
If you don’t want to choose between beaches or mountains, one country or a trip, and don’t feel like spending a fortune on your holiday, Cyprus is the perfect destination for you! And don’t worry about the language – most of the people (around 80%) are speaking fluent English.
Variety of beaches
Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean Sea with a summer weather almost all year round. It has amazing beaches so you can relax and enjoy summer baths. If you stay in the cities by the sea (Limassol, Paphos Larnaca, Agia Napa, etc.), you are only minutes away from Macronissos beach, Nissi beach, Coral Bay, Konnos Bay and many more beaches. Although the title doesn’t really matter, the whole island is surrounded by the sea, so wherever you decide to stay, the white sand and sky-blue water is always there. Of course, if you decide to stay in the capital Nicosia (as I did), it will take you an hour or two to get to the beach (if you don’t have a car, the one-time bus ticket price is around 3-5eur).
Go Cliff Jumping
If you want to feel adrenaline rushing through your veins, Cyprus has something to offer! Cliff jumping is one of the most popular activities for brave hearts. Cape Greco – this is the place where you find caves that you can enter to explore, but first you will have to jump from 12m height to get there. Climbing up is not a problem – the cliff is quite easy to climb, since it is not steep and has nature-made “stairs”. A tip from me – even though the water is see-through and doesn’t look deep, you will not reach the bottom, so don’t look down and JUMP! After the first time, it becomes an addiction.
Enjoy the Parties
Want to party and free yourself from all the worries? Cyprus is here to help you with its amazing parties. From pubs and clubs, to beach parties and boat parties! In every city, you will find a great variety of clubs for any taste. Agia Napa is probably the best choice for party lovers, since it has a “clubbing street” where you can find any kind of music, from country style to trance. And there is always someone from the club staff, who are ready to give you special offers and discounts if you come to their club.
However, boat parties are my personal favorites. They start around noon and all you need is to wear your swimming suit, have a towel and some cash (for drinks). The DJ’s and the bar is provided. Basically, the boat party is a trip in the sea for around 4 hours with dances, cocktails, swimming and jumping to the sea. Also, there is always a host, who organizes some games during the trip. One of the best experiences you can have!
Also, in almost every beach in the afternoon there are organized beach parties – with great music and a bar. So, you can dance in the sand and enjoy the sunset with a cocktail in your hand. For a more serious party, Guaba beach bar is one of the most popular ones (it is in Limassol). It is a club and has a private entering to the sea. Every Sunday they have fiestas with light shows and the most popular clubbing music. It looks like a mini version of Tomorrowland festival and is open only for the hot season (from end of April or beginning of May).
Perfect for romantics
If you are looking for a romantic couple getaway, you should definitely come to this love island. In fact, Cyprus is the birthland of the love goddess Aphrodite. Therefore, you should visit the Aphrodite’s rock or Petra tou Romiou (Rock of the Greek), which is near the main road between Paphos and Limassol. What can be more romantic than watching the sunset with your significant other in the Loveland?
Also, if you are staying in the capital Nicosia, I would recommend visiting the restaurant “Romantica”. The title says it all – romantic atmosphere is a guarantee! Of course, the best time is in the evening. The lighting is perfect (blue and purple mixture, not too bright), you can choose to sit inside or in a beautiful garden-terrace, the service is brilliant and they have a great choice of wines – if you don’t know what you like, the waiters are more than happy to assist you. It is not the cheapest place, but if you are here for couple glasses of wine, you will be able to spend not more than 20 eur. A tip: if you came only for a glass of wine, better come with an empty stomach too, because the snacks plate (free) is more than enough!
If hiking is your passion
I love Cyprus, because it offers not only beautiful beaches, but also hiking activities. Mountains are not too high, but has beautiful views! Troodos mountains are the most popular and has some cute villages and wineries worth visiting. In the Troodos square, you can find a small market with very friendly merchants, who are more than happy to let you try everything they are selling before buying. They offer dried fruits and nuts, some traditional drinks (some of them, it is thought, can improve your sexual life!), and, of course, Cyprus delights (fruity taste jelly sweets). Also, it is not just a dry land, there are forests and even waterfalls, so you can take a walk and enjoy fresh air and beautiful nature.
Greek and Turkish cultures
If you walk around the capital Nicosia, you will definitely reach the border that is right in the centre of the city. Cyprus is divided in two – the Greek part and the Turkish part. After crossing the border (you just need to have your passport or ID card), you instantly get a feel of a different country. For instance, if you are staying in the Greek part, after walking a few meters past the border, you can hear only Turkish language, you can buy Turkish souvenirs and sweets, visit Mosques (not Orthodox churches that are in the Greek part) and even hear the Muslim “call to prayer” all over the Turkish part, which are not present in the Greek part. Also, you can buy brand clothes very cheap, i.e. Nike leggings for 10eur. Of course, they probably are fake ones, but nobody will know that when you wear it in your homeland, right?
Mix of cuisine
The food in Cyprus is the best! Since it is a mix of cultures (Greek, Turkish and Arabic), there are many different tastes for you to try. From the Greek kitchen, they have amazing grilled meats and seafood with wonderful sauces – tzatziki is a must to taste! If you want to try everything, but don’t want to spend hundreds of euros, try meze – you can order it for at least two people (price for one around 15eur) and the waiter will start bringing you small plates of traditional food – from starters of pita bread, sauces and salad, to traditional grilled meat or sea food. If you are a fan of Turkish cuisine, there are great kebabs. And from Arabic kitchen – they have falafels with yoghurt based sauces – these are one of my favourites!
Wine & olive oil
It would be a crime not to mention the great culture of wine and olive oil in Cyprus. Mostly in the mountains you will find beautiful vineyards and can go on wine tasting tours – the owners themselves will show you around their wineries and explain in detail the winemaking process. Also, in Cyprus they are making their own olive oil and if you have the opportunity, I suggest visiting the Oleastro olive oil park and museum. There you will get the opportunity to know the history of olive oil and how it is made, and taste the freshly made olive oil with bread. The museum is like a mini park with live animals, moving exhibitions and recorded guide stories. Really worth visiting!
I could continue talking about Cyprus and what a wonderful island it is, but my stories are just a tip of the mountain of the experiences you can get visiting Cyprus yourself! Go ahead and spend your holiday in this love island. Here you can find everything you want without spending a fortune on traveling to multiple countries. Enjoy the beaches, hiking, mix of cultures and delicious cuisine – all in one country!
