Sunny South Africa is home to the glorious Cape Town, also known as the Mother City. Cape Town is one of those rare cities that truly have it all – mountains, ocean, winelands, rich history, electric nightlife, authentic culture, and not to mention the weather – the weather is incredible! I remember the very first time I set foot in the Mother City, from the moment I laid eyes on all her glorious splendour I was hooked. Done! Game over! And since then I’ve only wanted more. I wanted to be part of ALL her magic! So much so, that I decided to move here as soon as I could. The simple truth is I love Cape Town! I love absolutely everything about this city, and today I’ll be sharing some of her magnificent landmarks and must-see destinations that will make you fall head-over heels in love with her too! Are you ready for your Cape Town journey of discovery? Well, here we go!
Declared as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World the magnificent Table Mountain in all its glory has been known to draw people from all corners of the globe, and after spending just 1 minute in its wake, you’ll know exactly why. In 1998 former and late President and world icon, Nelson Mandela proclaimed Table Mountain ‘a gift to the earth’. And that’s exactly what Table Mountain is – an incredible gift to this earth, and we all get the incredible pleasure of witnessing it! With its status as one of the greatest formations of its kind, Table Mountain is everything you can imagine and so much more! Standing tall at a whopping 1,086 meters above sea level, this iconic flat topped mountain is sure to stop you dead in your tracks when you see it for the first time.
But, if you want the extra special Mother City treat, you absolutely must climb it! Yes, you read that right! It’s only when you get the opportunity to venture up Table Mountain that you get to fully and completely appreciate it! There are a variety of routes you can take, but for a first time climber I definitely recommend the Platteklip Gorge hike. If hiking is however not quite your style, you can also take the cable cart to the top, this in itself offers a view that’s hard to put into words, you absolutely must experience it for yourself! And once you do, I promise you’ll never ever forget it! This is one Mother City bucket list item you absolutely MUST tick off!
Robben Island is one of Cape Town’s most cherished heritage sites, but more than that, it forms an integral part of South Africa’s diverse history and long road to democracy. So, if you’re looking to immerse yourself fully in the South African culture, you absolutely must visit this Mother City landmark. Prepare yourself for first-hand stories of all Robben Island’s ex-prisoners, including world-renowned icon Nelson Mandela, from a former political prisoner himself that serves as your guide. But besides its rich political history, the island offers spectacular scenery and a pretty interesting geographical and environmental perspective too. This is one piece of South African heritage that is worth every second of exploring. On your way there you might even encounter an extra special treat – a glimpse of the Cape Fur Seals!
Cape Town Beaches:
The Mother City certainly has no shortage of magnificent beaches, that’s for sure! Ranging from long, out-stretched, white sand strips, to enclosed bays and rock pools, there’s definitely something for everyone. Camps Bay, Clifton Beach, Boulders Bay and Bloubergstrand are 4 of my favourite spots. And let me tell you, sitting on the beach while watching a Mother City sunset – well, that is something else entirely! I would even go as far as to say a Cape Town sunset might just be the only sunset you will EVER need!
The Cape Winelands:
You haven’t quite had the full Cape Town experience until you’ve gone to the Cape Winelands and indulged in one of their unique wine tastings. It’s pretty much a Mother City rite of passage! As soon as I moved to Cape Town I realised one thing – in order to walk the Cape Town walk, you need to be able to talk the Cape Town talk, and here they talk about WINE! And with so many magnificent Wine Estates to choose from, all offering sensational award-winning wines and unique jaw-dropping sceneries, it isn’t hard to understand why! Groot Constantia is definitely one of my favourite wine estates, not only because of their incredible wine, but it’s also South Africa’s oldest wine producing estate, thereby bringing with it rich history and a truly diverse experience. Are you ready for the wine experience of a lifetime? Well, you better be, because Cape Town is about to provide you with a whole lot of it!
At the very tip of the Cape Peninsula, 60km south-west of the city of Cape Town, lies the magnificent Cape Point. This is a true Mother City gem that is known to draw locals and tourists alike, mainly because you have EVERYTHING right at your finger-tips! Beautiful, unspoiled beaches, rich history, incredible views, jaw-dropping scenery and exhilarating ocean adventures! It really is any nature enthusiast’s paradise, or at least it was this nature enthusiast’s paradise! True Cape Town bliss at its finest!
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens:
It is acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world, it has won the highly esteemed ‘International Garden of the Year’ award, and very few gardens in the world can actually match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch – if you’re a nature lover or merely appreciate the simple beauty nature has to offer, you absolutely must visit these world-renowned Gardens! Here you get to enjoy hikes, picnics, guided tours, water-fall discoveries, music concerts and SO much more! And I highly recommend going on the treetop canopy walkway, it really is super cool!
You know what they say, it’s all about that Cape Town feeling, and what an incredible feeling it is! Trust me, once you explore and experience some of these Mother City gems, you won’t ever be able to get enough of the Cape Town magic. You’ll be spell-bound, just like me!
