Amazing architecture, breath-taking views, and hospitable people. That is exactly what you are waiting for when going to the typical Europian city. It is no doubt that Kiev is one of them. I have been living here since I was born, and I can definitely say that if you want to get inspiration and take tons of beautiful photos, this city is right for you.

Walk down the Andriyivskyy Descent

One of the most mysterious streets in Kiev is Andriyivskyy Descent. Right before you take a step in the street, you will see a great church on the hill. It will be the 18th century Saint Andrew’s Church, designed by an Italian architect. Then you will wander past old artists, sitting in front of their canvases, see handmade markets, selling Ukrainian attributes, and you will be surrounded by fascinating nature. All of these is attracting more and more foreigners every year.
In the heart of the street, you will find Mikhail Bulgakov Museum, an author of The Master and Margarita, a worldwide known novel. It is surely worth visiting, as its atmosphere is filled with mystical events from the novel.

Have a look at Kiev street art

After the 2014 revolution, many Ukrainian and European artists started painting the side walls of old high-rise buildings. There are more than 100 masterpieces now. Murals have already become a pearl of Kiev. That is why you don’t want to miss such kind of activity. You can find some of them in Ivana Franka Street, Honchar Street, Spasskaya Street and so on. Google Maps App has marks on it of all of the murals. So, they are easy to track.

Take a ride on a funicular

Kiev funicular is one of the first to appear in the world. It goes from Podil to Upper City. Having fun on this one will cost you 4 UAH which equals to about 0,15 USD and the ride will take nearly 3 minutes. During this short trip, you will enjoy looking at panoramas of Podil, Dniper river-boat station, and Truhanov island.
Enclosed by an amazing nature the funicular goes straight to the Mariinsky Park. I remember being a child and looking at sculptures of the famous cartoon characters which were so realistic and played with me in my imagination. If you have children, it is certainly a place to go. Also, be sure to book tickets to the Water Museum situated just in the middle of the park.

There you will discover a lot of interesting information about water, your children will stand in a long soap bubble and you will even see a huge toilet!

Talking about Mariinsky Park, don’t hesitate to have a look at one of our state buildings. I sometimes compare it to the White House, because it is really impressive as well. That is the Mariinsky Palace which is a ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine.

Try local food

Have you ever heard of our famous dish called borsch? In fact, it is a soup made of pork, carrots, onion, potatoes and the main ingredient is beetroot. Ukrainians enjoy eating it with garlic for lunch. You can try it in the Ukrainian style restaurants in the city center, or on the outskirts. You won’t regret.

If you are not sure about borsch you can have a snack at a small stand in Teatralna street, called Kyivska Perepichka. They offer deep fat made buns with a sausage inside. This is the favorite snack of any Kiever (of course, if he is not a vegan). Teatralna street is the only place where you can try it. But the smell fills the air everywhere around.

Here is a tip: make sure you are not in a hurry because you will have to wait in a queue for about 10-15 minutes during the weekends.

Summer music festival

In case, you plan your trip to Kiev in summery hot days, be sure to buy tickets to the fourth biggest Ukrainian music festival Atlas Weekend. Each year more and more people from different counties are coming to listen to a wide range of various bands and performers. There you will have an opportunity to choose what kind of music to listen to. There are a lot of stages, and you can find schedules with each singer or band performance. This year the festival will be from the 4th to the 8th of July. And some of the worldwide known headliners have already been announced.

Here is a little tip from me: don’t buy tickets for only a day or two, if you decide to go. Get a pass for all five days. That will definitely be cheaper, and moreover, you’ll have five days in a row having fun with your friends and more than 350 000 people. The price for tickets is about 50 USD for five days. But be aware, that the fewer days there are to the festival, the more you’ll have to pay for the tickets. Here is a link where you can buy tickets:

Pool and beach clubs

Proceeding with the topic of summery hot days, that you may want to spend in Kiev, I can surely recommend you to visit one of the pools or beach clubs. There is a wide range to choose from in Kiev. Unfortunately, almost all of them are not free, but you will certainly have fun there. Cold drinks, food, music and an amazing background for your photos is all you can dream about when you want to spend a relaxing day by the pool. The entrance prices vary from 5 to 25 USD for a person.

Usually, when you think about a vacation, the first places that come to mind are the worldwide known spots, crowded with tourists. But what if one day, you’ll want to go somewhere extraordinary, not that known, but unique and beautiful. Think about Kiev. It is a city where you will get everything you need. From inspiration to delicious food. From having fun to solace. And from aesthetic pleasure to beautiful music.
