Trekking the Cliffs of Cinque Terre (Italy)

Cinque Terre means ‘Five Lands’ and is a National Park, covering five small and charming villages on Italian North coastline (often referred to as Italian Riviera), Liguria region. One can find a bunch of other picturesque villages and small towns close to the region (Portofino, La Spezia, Levanto, etc.) worth a visit, however my target was Cinque Terre villages themselves (well, I did spent several hours in La Spezia, as it took me just three minutes by train from Cinque Terre village Riomaggiore).

GETTING THERE

To all the road trippers, there is some bad news for you. The whole of Cinque Terre is essentially a no car zone. I am not very sure if cars are actually restricted or it is so because it’s practically impossible to manoeuvre a car through its extremely narrow and steep lanes. But if you are on a road trip to Italy and have no option but to get there by your car, I’d suggest that you park at either of the two ends- Monterosso in the north or Riomaggiorre in the South and hike the villages in between. Surely the best way to explore Cinque Terre is on foot(best best best). Also note that parking anywhere in Cinque Terre can be an expensive affair and can be full in the peak season. A cheaper and more convenient option is to park your car at La Spezia Station and get on a train from there. And to people who plan to travel by train, you are already doing the right thing. No tips for you except booking a ticket in advance. A last minute train ticket @Euro 60 from Rome got me to Monterosso in about 3 hours. There are no direct trains to Monterosso. I changed twice, once at Florence, once at Pisa. But the trains were on time and I was travelling light. So changing trains wasn’t a hassle at all.

Cinque Terre: a hidden paradise

Cinque Terre is the name given to a piece of land in Italy at the Ligure Riviera, it is mainly characterized by the mountainous ground closed to the sea. It is composed of the communes Riomaggiore, Vernazza and Monterosso Al Mare and the districts of Corniglia and Manarola. Due to the great slope, the area has this typical terraces used for agricultural techniques and, as a way to protect them in 1999 was built the National Park of Cinque Terre. The easiest way to get to Cinque Terre is through a train, you can start your journey from Gênova or La Spezia, they each have a station that leads you to all the five sites.

Let us start with Campiglia Tramonti:

You can reach it, like I did, from La Spezia central train station, by taking a mini bus that goes straight to Campiglia. You can buy the ticket from the local tobacco shops, either one in the train station or one close to it. Tickets can also be purchased online. The driver does not sell tickets, at least did not, when I was there. Ticket price is 2.5 euros one way and if you think of going by car, just note that the road from La Spezia to Campiglia is like a skinny snake rolled around a big oak tree. It has tens of turns after turns and you do not have visibility to anticipate if a car is coming or not. For this reason, the driver was slowing and honking before each turn.
