On the Volvo Bus

Bore: Once you near your destination, the sky will stop being a soft horizon. We went there in the monsoon season, so the clouds were both thick and wispy at once. Heavy enough that they could create flash floods – something that would become a real possibility when we went to the neighbouring Manali – but here around the curves of the Dhauladhar mountains, also too slow and quiet to be scary. Instead the clouds become a constant companion; it becomes hard to distinguish them from the mist sprayed up by the roaring waterfalls and the fog that obscures everything in the mornings.

Getting there

Kheerganga is a very small village, to which you would have to do a 13 km trek through dense coniferous forests. To get to Kheerganga, you will have to take a bus to Manali from Chandigarh since there is no direct bus to Kheerganga. You will have to deboard at Bhuntar, a small village before Kullu. From Bhuntar, you need to take a local bus to Kasol or Manikaran, which generally takes about an hour to reach Manikaran. In Manikaran, you will take a taxi to Barshaini, which is the base for the Kheerganga trek. Also, Barshaini is the base for the trek to Tosh, which is just 2-3 kilometres from there and the Mantalai lake which is actually a 6-day trek one way. Mantalai lake is the origin of the Parvati river.

Day 1: Bangalore to Delhi to Manali

Leh is a much talked about aspirational vacation destination for many from bikers to trekking enthusiasts to those who merely like to discover the farthest corners of the world. But so vast is this destination that one can only hope to make the most of the time that they can afford to spend there. There’s no doing justice to this place, however long one stays. But here’s a brief attempt at covering as much as was possible of this amazing land in a 15 day holiday by a solo traveller from Bangalore to Leh and back. Day 1: Bangalore to Delhi to Manali Departure from Bangalore 8 am, land in Delhi by 10 am. Spend the day in Delhi sightseeing – Rashtrapati Bhawan, India Gate, Connaught Place. Board bus to Manali in the night by 9 pm.

A little slice of the Himalayas: Manali, India

In early March I made the long trip up to the North Western Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, home of the vast mountain range known as the Himalayas to a little village called Manali in the Kullu Valley, with a population of around 8000 people.
