Ladakh: exploring the stunning mountain region of India

I visited Ladakh in May 2016 with my boyfriend from India. I experienced the uniqueness of this region with the help of an Indian travel agency. First we thought, why not we plan the trip ourselves as we did many times before for other places? Firstly – budget. It makes almost no difference to book a pre-planned group trip through the agency or book every hotel and transport separately. And secondly, May marks the beginning of the high tourist season in this region, as the snow in the mountains is mostly melted and the rainy season has not started yet, so it is difficult to find accommodation if you don’t book months in advance. Leh, the largest city in Ladakh region.

GETTING TO LEH

More than 2 years ago I met my first Indian friend in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He started to introduce me to Indian culture and recommended me a movie called Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Ever since I saw that movie I wanted to visit that North part of India, Ladakh – land of high passes. GETTING TO LEH Leh-Ladakh is part of the state Jammu & Kashmir in the North part of India and is a land like no other. Bounded by two of the world’s mightiest mountain ranges, the Great Himalaya and the Karakoram. It is surrounded by the international borders with China and Pakistan. Culture and history is highly comparable to Tibetan. The principal language of Ladakh is Ladakhi but educated Ladakhi understand Hindu and also English. It is one of the highest places on earth (altitude between 8,800 feet and 18,000 feet approx.) with very dry and cold clima. In winter temperature reaches -40 degrees Celsius. I read somewhere that only in Ladakh can a person sitting in the sun with his feet in the shade suffer from sunstroke and frostbite at the same time. The beauty of the place cannot be expressed in words. It has breathtaking landscape with Buddhist monasteries (gompas) and beautiful spiritual messages written on colorful fluttering prayer flags.

Ladakh: The Land of Rugged Beauty in Jammu and Kashmir, India

In early August 2014, I finally got an opportunity to visit this lovely place. A group of twelve, we started our journey from Mumbai. We took a flight to Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, India. After spending an evening in Srinagar, we started our journey to Leh city in Ladakh by road, the next day.

Land of Mountains - Leh

India : Land of Mountains – Leh, Jammu and Kashmir Location: In the midst of the beautiful Himalayas lies a small town, Leh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Surrounded by mountains on all sides Leh is a beautiful town. As soon as you land you are greeted by these mountains.  If you visit Leh in the months of March-April you can see snow-capped mountains.  Since Leh is at an altitude of 11,500 feet from sea level, it is advisable to let yourself acclimatise for the first 24-48 hours by avoiding any physical exertion and getting some rest, after all you’re on a holiday ;). Also stock up on some Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) to keep yourself hydrated.
