Ten things to know about Cambodia before visiting

Angkor Wat: The City of Temples

Angkor … What? If you haven’t heard of Angkor Wat, it is one of the most iconic temples in the Angkor complex located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It is by far one of the most famous places to visit if you are every in Cambodia. As a bit of a back story, Angkor is a complex of over 50 temples spanning a region of 400km2. For some of these temples, barely a wall remains; but others are structural masterpieces that are still intact after 1000 years. It is without a doubt, a must see if you are are travelling through Cambodia. In my mind there are the ‘Big 3’ that are the most popular, awe-inspiring, instagram-worthy temples to visit. The ‘Big 3’ include:

4. Skip the Expensive Destinations

Vietnam, Cambodia and most of Thailand (except a few of the more popular islands) were all this cheap. You may be worried that you will pay for the cheapness with inconvenience, but these countries are well travelled and are very well set up for tourists. The same can probably be said for Laos, Philippines, Indonesia and India, though I haven’t personally got there yet. Don’t expect the infrastructure of your comfortable first-world home, but these places are excellent for low-cost adventures.

Getting Around Phnom Penh

Transportation is an important topic when traveling. We all know the struggles of finding that perfect Uber driver in a crowded city. Well, Phnom Penh is no different. Well, maybe a little different. Getting from point A to point B can be a daunting task, that is overwhelming to the fresh-faced westerner. At times you may feel like you are in the live-action game of Frogger. The streets are crowded with vendors and businesses flowing out into the curb. Oh yeah, not to mention the thousands of scooters with four grown men stacked on them, or an entire cart’s worth of eggs, that weave between cars and pedestrians. Street signs and traffic lights are approached as more of a suggestion than an actual rule, and in places driving into oncoming traffic is a common practice. Don’t let those challenges discourage you. There are always Tuk Tuk drivers ready and willing to plunge into the wild jungle of the Cambodian traffic scene, and you should let them, for good reason. They have watched the city grow and traversed the Kingdom of Wonder for years. These guys are pros. They make merging into traffic look like a work of art.

Riverside Town

Cambodia has some of my FAVORITE places. One of those places is Kampot. It is a small riverside town that somehow seemed to have everything I needed to be happy and only that. There were great international restaurants along with people from all over the world, a little movie theater, fair rides, bars, natural attractions, and a beach a few minutes away. I stayed there for two weeks while waiting for a visa to process (I stupidly decided to apply during the Chinese New Year). They even have a cool light-up bridge. I believe the best time to go is during the cool season which is between November and March (I went in February). Temperatures at that time are around 20-26 degrees Celsius.

Street food and Cocktails – the Weird and Wonderful things to eat in Cambodia

Cambodia is a fascinating country. From the ancient temples of Angkor Wat, to the grisly graves of the Killing Fields, it is a place full of new experiences. And this includes the adventurous eaters out there! The street food in the major cities ranges from fresh exotic foods, to creepy crawlies, while the fantastic drink prices means you can try a new cocktail each night!

Jamie Buckland

Getting off the beaten path in Siem Reap: see the real Cambodia

‘Cambodia is nice’, they said. ‘But two weeks will be more than enough’, they said. Big mistake! And I will explain you why. A lot of backpackers quickly cruise their way through this country, while going from Vietnam to Thailand or the other way around. They drink a few beers in the bubbly bars of Siem Reap to wake up early next morning and tick off their checklists. In groups, they do their mandatory temple tour, and that’s that. But there is so much more.

Going it Alone

Travelling can be somewhat obscure. We like to think we are channelling our inner hippy, by giving it all up for the backpacker life. Donning clip in dreadlocks, a mad pair of psychedelic pants and a lonely planet guide, we head off to South East Asia for Full Moon parties, bamboo tatts and buckets of piss, masquerading as whiskey. Once the obligatory 6 weeks are done, and Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia are ticked off, we head down under to settle in a compound of ethnically similar people, get a 9 to 5, and make sure we are indoors by 7pm to watch Home and Away. This is not what we signed up for, but somewhere down the track, we jumped on the bandwagon and have been hanging on tight ever since.

Cambodian island life

Cambodia’s tourism has increased considerably in the past years, with scores of backpackers and tour groups flocking to see what is undoubtedly it’s most famous attraction: Angkor Wat. And although it is indeed an awe-inspiring sight to behold, Cambodia has so much more to offer, including pristine beaches on it’s two most popular islands, Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem.

The dreamy island of Koh Ta Kiev

Cambodia is a country of bustling cities, big jungles, beautiful beaches and almost many islands. Most people travelling to Cambodia go here for the beaches around Sihanoukville, and of course Angkor Wat. This time I want to take you to Sihanoukville and the beautiful island Koh Ta Kiev. There are many islands around, and it’s hard to decide which island to go to, when you have so many to choose from. There is one perfect island for you, you just have to find it.

Sin City - Cambodia Dirty South

I visited Cambodia twice. Beginning with a cumbersome suitcase, so not cool among the backpacker community, I spent three weeks in the country arriving from Thailand via air, again frowned upon as a totally unnecessary waste of time and money when a couple of buses to make my way across the border was all that was required. It would certainly have been cheaper and faster than the two flights I took, one across the gulf to Singapore then after a long layover a second one back across the gulf to arrive in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh. Dragging my suitcase behind me and an over weight carry-on on my back I was obviously not a seasoned traveller.

Battambang; Cambodia's Second Largest City and Why You Should Go

Cambodia has a place on many destination bucket lists and is home to the worlds largest temple, a great and cheap nightlife, rich jungles and to the south, some of Asia’s nicest islands but the place which left the biggest impression on me here was Battambang, an often overlooked city on many travel itineraries.
