Siargao is the place: a tear-drop shaped island, that extends for approximately 473 square kilometers in the Philippine Sea, located in the Surigao del Norte Province, separated from Mindanao Island by the Hinatuan’s Channel. It’s known as the surfing capital of Philippines, but it’s not just about that.

PACO PARK

Paco Park was built during Spanish colonial period and used to be a cemetery for Spanish aristocrats. Philippines’ national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, was once interred here after his execution on December 30, 1896. I searched for the place where he was once buried when I went there, I found the one with the marker sign RPJ, the letters got me confused and curious so I did a little research on the internet. According to Wikipedia and Inquirer.net, Rizal’s younger sister, Narcissa, bribed the caretaker to mark the site with Rizal’s reverse initial (RPJ) to avoid getting the attention of Spanish authorities who might remove his body there to prevent public veneration. It was also the burial place of three martyr priests, Gomburza (Jose Mariano Gomez, Jose Apolonio Burgos and Jacinto Zamora). The Park is in a circular shape with its thick inner and outer walls. The top of these walls are made into pathways where you can walk around and just enjoy the view. The entrance of the Park led to a lovely fountain and a small domed Catholic Chapel.

Siquijor: An Island of Mystique & Enchantment

What do you write about on your first ever blog entry? It may sound simple enough for others, but for me, I guess I would have to write about a place close to your heart. This place, wrapped up in mystery and mystique, is the majestic island of Siquijor, my mother’s roots. You may wonder why I describe this island as such, but believe me, there is not enough words to capture this island found nowhere else but the Philippines.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD!

This little island in the south offers the freshest seafood you can find in the Philippines and if you’re in time for the lanzones festival, you can stuff yourself with the sweetest bunch of lanzones which the people of the island are happy enough to give you during the whole celebration. Our favorite food to eat while around the island is always kinilaw or raw fish “cooked” in locally made vinegar. It is awesome how they make this dish out there and you have to order it wherever you plan to eat around the island. Another you have to try is a handful of raw sea urchin when visiting Camiguin’s White Island.

JJ King, delicious bbq ribs. Drive past Cloud 9 and turn left at the end of the road, it is right next to uno dos trece, an equally as good café with the best pizza in town. You cannot go wrong with anything from Kermit’s and the restaurant has one of the most well-known chefs in the Philippines currently. If you are in the mood for French cuisine check out Kawayan or Kanilaw. If you are after crepes or breakfast food, Palaka is worth checking out.

Tranquil Island

Those three days I’ve stayed in the island were memorable. If only I had more time to stay, I would have extended my vacation. Unfortunately, those were the only days I had to spend my time off from work. Nonetheless, I was able to maximize my time and do the things I need to do while here. I am glad that the locals are very accommodating and at the same time helpful. Since El Nido is one of the top travel destinations not only in the Philippines, but internationally, there were a lot of foreign travelers around the place. The locals manage to keep a peaceful surrounding at all times and there is really nothing to worry about even if you stay late outside.

Go Cruising along Bojo River in Aloguinsan Cebu

In the Philippines, there certainly isn’t a scarcity in eco-parks to visit. When a place starts getting popular because of its natural wonders, the local government immediately seeks to protect the place while still allowing guests to come and visit.

1. Access to Convenience

As I have mentioned above, there are numerous business opportunities within the village that due to these, the village is so wide that people say it is larger than ‘Pateros’ which is one of the cities in the Philippines.Furthermore, there are numerous unique restaurants and fast food stores within the village itself. Different cuisines ranging from roasted or grilling dishes, Chinese food, Filipino dishes, Japanese tastes and much more. Eight-nine Kitchenette is known as the village’s restaurant for Filipino dishes and is run by a fellow homeowner. It has a delivery option that even customers outside of the village order from them. Their dishes are so delicious that their restaurant is even visited by non-villagers just to eat there and enjoy the view as their restaurant is stationed on the top floor of their building. A pizza house and a few cafes are also stationed near the public park of the village where most friends and relatives meet-up for a number of meetings or get-togethers. Two Catholic churches are also stationed within the subdivision. One is already a parish church while the other is a chapel that is made from the project of the previous parish priest of the village. These churches are not just ordinary churches for they are very beautiful that even tourists go visit them.

Siquijor: A paradise feared

If you’re from the Philippines, you would have definitely heard of the hearsay about Siquijor. How this province is the land of the witches, having their magic spells onto people. How it’s easily associated with “mangkukulam” or “gayuma”. I for one definitely heard of that, but did not waiver about visiting this province. I knew for a fact that there’s a reason why this province is kept away from visitors, and I experienced why.

GETTING AROUND BANTAYAN

So on my second day, I decided to visit the town proper and see what it has to offer. On my way there, I found myself in awe of the picturesque views it gave me. One of the advantages of backpacking in the Philippines is that there is little to none language barrier because almost all Filipinos speak basic English. So if you get lost, all you need to do is ask a local.
