Welcome to Nairobi: The Lush City Under The Sun.

“Enkare Nairobi”- is a coinage of the phrase ‘a sanctuary of cool waters’ by the Maasai-a local Kenyan community, and which encapsulates the ecological craftsmanship that is Nairobi. Yes, Nairobi was then known, and even now known, as `a sanctuary of cool waters’, the blooming city under the sun. The predominant tribe which occupied Nairobi during the pre-colonial times was the pastoralist Maasai community, a tribe known for its rich cultural heritage; and that explains the differential populations of the Maasai community which inhabits towns in the outskirts of Nairobi such as Kitengela, Kiserian and Rongai, all which border the Nairobi National Park.

KENYA: TIPS ON EXPLORING LAMU

My ideal vacation involves sandy beaches, perfect weather, beautiful sunsets, and cocktails. Lots of cocktails. When a friend approached me with the idea of visiting a coastal town, I was all smiles. With many destinations to choose from, be it Lamu, Watamu or Malindi in Kilifi, Kenya, we finally settled on Lamu since we hadn’t been there before. To ease the planning, we had a WhatsApp group where we shared ideas on places to stay and activities to do. We booked our tickets and were on the evening bus to Mombasa.

Exploring Mombasa; Beach and City

The warmth tingling on my shoulders and cheek wakes me up. I open my eyes groggily, it feels like I’ve only been asleep for two hours and I attempt to shake the haze of confusion from my head. It doesn’t work. I close my eyes for two seconds and that seems to do the trick. When I open them up again I see the medium sized Nakumatt *a common Kenyan supermarket* Nyali Branch in front of me.  The bus I am currently travelling in with a group of friends slows down and it seems that the whole bus is still in anticipation for it to stop. Either that or my imagination is overworking and everyone else is simply still asleep. I’m sure somewhere at the back I can hear someone still snoring quietly. Finally the bus stops and it’s time for everyone who is getting out here to shuffle out as sanely as possible. Some people are taking the bus further into the town until the Big Modern Coast encrusted bus reaches its final destination. Our stop is here. Thank God. After almost eight hours inside with just one stop in the middle of the night our muscles are practically crying to be stretched. Already we see the unique vintage aura that this town displays

Unique places to visit for hiking & team building in Nairobi

Nairobi is one of the most beautiful cities in KENYA. Globally, it is ranked among the few cities that have a national park right next to it.

Natural Waters – Fourteen Falls

Located about 65 kilometers north east of Nairobi town off Thika-Garissa Road, Fourteen Falls is one of the most iconic waterfall features in Kenya. Babs Hoffman once said, “Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and enjoy the journey”, a disclaimer that clearly describes the kilometers of dirt between the main road and the entrance to Fourteen Falls. The dust is simply unbelievable but I chose to see the housing structures that are both old and fascinating. To this day, how the mud blends with the dust and few building stones to create a structure are still unfathomable.

Evening Bonfire

By the time we got back, dinner was ready so was a bonfire. We all sat by the bonfire having some drinks, and getting to know each other better. Coincidentally, it was a first time for all of us to be in the Mara except the tour guide of course. Two people had come to Kenya as experts and decided to explore what the country had to offer. Our tour guide suggested we should have a very early morning game drive and have a bush lunch. We then went for our dinner, after which we all left for our rooms to relax after a long exciting day as we looked forward to what the next day had to offer.

Best Places To Visit In Nairobi Kenya; The Mamba Village Resort

Great and memorable experiences are everything we look forward to whenever it is time for the holidays. Planning is very vital when it comes to choosing a destination.  If you love nature like I do, Africa has the most exotic destinations to make any holiday dream come alive. In the heart of East Africa lies the Mamba Village, about 13 Kilometers from Kenya’s capital city; Nairobi. This is located in the leafy suburbs of Karen that creates the perfect atmosphere to enjoy nature at its best. The serene environment is characterized by a wide range of attractions and activities to participate in. Additionally, it is located a few meters away from the Galleria Mall. This world-class shopping mall makes shopping convenient.

At the parking lot.

We didn’t spot any warthogs on this day, though. There was ample parking space, but I suppose this could be expected on a Thursday afternoon in the middle of November. The park plays host to several school groups throughout the school year – had we chosen to come on a Thursday afternoon in March, or July there would probably be about 3 or 4 school buses in the parking lot – and lots of eager little children all around. I mention this because community education is an important part of the National Park’s manifesto. They actively encourage children from all over the country to visit the park and learn more about the wildlife here in Kenya. They do this by subsidizing the entrance fee for minors into the park, and they have a lot of educational programs and material on hand for the kids.

Nairobi Safari Walk – The Experience

Within the Nairobi Safari Walk on a sunny day, it seems like evening due to the dense canopy of tree cover.  There are about 150 tree species there. On one of these trees is where I spotted a lioness perched lazily on top of a tree.  The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has built a huge mesh that makes it impossible for the lion to jump from the tree to the boardwalk.  To get a clear view I had to go to a house with a thick mirror which offered a better view.

Lake Turkana - The wonder of a desert

Turkana county is the northwesternmost region in Kenya. The climate is very hot and dry. Let me emphasize that, the climate is very hot and dry.”You need to be careful that you are not dehydrated!” is what I was adviced when planning for the trip there. I was going to be traveling with a group of friends for a whole five days! Now, I love traveling and I delight in seeing new places. I just do not want to be in a place of excessive heat and fainting of dehydration. Turns out I need not have worried. The county in itself is the wonder of a desert. The trip is one of the most worthwhile destinations that I have ever been to. We left Nairobi in no particular hurry. We were going to use a comfortable Mitsubishi Fuso Tourist track for the journey. Turkana is also accessible via a flight from Nairobi. Most flights headed to Turkana will often make a quick stopover at Eldoret International Airport. The flight to Turkana is normally about an hour and 30 minutes making allowance for the stopover. For us, it was going to be a road trip. We gave ourselves a whole day for crossing through the counties, gathering fresh produce in Nanyuki, Meru and Karatina towns to take to our missionary friends living in Turkana.  Not even many Kenyans have been to Turkana. It is, however, a grand destination that you want to visit and enjoy.  I summarized my experience in the below points for your indulgence when planning for that lifetime trip up North!

Linda Kabora

Club Timba

Then there’s the fact that the main highway is a key trade route between Kenya and Uganda, so there are a lot of travellers and truck drivers going through the town every day. Another thing that’s made the town thrive is its people are large-scale farmers, industrialists and athletes in training (and retirement).

What to do, love, and see in Nairobi

Nairobi isn’t a city people spend too much time in. Generally if you’ve travelled to Kenya’s capital, it’s a jumping-off point for adventurous safaris through the Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru, or a long tour through East Africa. I headed off on the latter – an East African dream – last December through to January. Before I start any tours anywhere, I always like to arrive in the city at least two days early. This gives me time to adjust to the time zones and get myself out of the transit-induced funk we all fall into after over 24 hours spent in and out of airports and airplanes. I booked my trip on a whim and last minute – I gave myself under six weeks to mentally and physically prepare, but made sure I arrived in Nairobi two days early. The only problem was…I had absolutely no idea what to do in this city.

Introduction

If you’ve ever wished to get out of the extremities of your imaginations and backpack to the most exciting destinations full of adventure, then let me lure you by relating the Mystiques of Maasai Mara wildlife destination. Maasai Mara has a lot to offer, not only the intriguing adventurous atmosphere but even with the outstanding and most luxurious hotels that dazzles the place. Situated at the south-west part of the Kenyan territories, Maasai Mara has been at the center of attraction owing to aesthetic eco-system that bewilders both internal and external tourists. I must admit that when I came to learn about this place, my trip to Narok County was a priority in my diary. With these amazing experiences in Maasai Mara am sharing here, I believe will make you fall for it even more!

Kenya: Nairobi Animal orphanage.

The orphanage is located in Nairobi National Park. The main purpose for setting it up was to provide a home and a rehabilitation center for wild animals that have been orphaned or injured throughout Kenya. Animals that are brought here are put on an appropriate feeding and rehabilitation program after undergoing a medical examination. All this is done by the Kenya Wildlife Service. They have trained and specialized staff to handle wildlife.

Airline Criteria Advice + A Trip to Nairobi!

I would encourage you to make your own criteria of what you want in an airline, and then join the rewards program of your favourite one so that you can benefit from the points that they give as you acquire miles. Sometimes the airlines have joined forces (like Kenya Airways and KLM) so your benefits will span across both airlines. The program that Kenya Airways and KLM use is called Flying Blue; the more you fly the more rewards you get and you can use those miles/points in various ways e.g. to upgrade your seat.

Nguuni Nature Sanctuary: Mombasa, Kenya

Just by the mention of Mombasa City in Kenya, all that clicks in your mind immediately is the white sandy beaches and the luxurious hotels. A lot of activities that most people engage in always revolve around the waters: snorkeling, surfing, dhow races, scuba diving or actually a visit to the historical sites such as the Fort Jesus, Gedi ruins and the Museums. But there is actually more to the usual swims, sun baths and strolls at the sea shore.

Staying safe on a mangrove site visit in Junda.

While on an assignment of facilitating a beekeeping training exercise at Junda, Mombasa in Kenya. I was struck by the thought of getting drowned by a massive swampy mangrove mud during a practical session of setting up a bee hive stand at the mangrove rehabilitation site. Frightened, I followed the instructions given by one of the trainers to walk rightfully through the path marked with footsteps of the person walking ahead of me. I have heard stories of the dreadful experience of people drowning in the muddy mangrove swampy site from the locals who work on a project of rehabilitating the mangroves forest that has degraded in the past at Junda Creek. Junda Creek is situated at Kenya’s coastal island-Mombasa with water coming from the Indian Ocean.
