Arriving in Paradise

Although it is a bit of a way to get there, boy do they make it comfortable for you and the privacy on the Laamu Atoll makes the trip well worth it. When you arrive in Male, a representative from Six Senses takes you and your luggage over to the domestic terminal where all Six Senses guests are privy to the newly renovated lounge. Food, drinks and free wifi abounds. Boarding the small boat ‘Sense of Speed’* you are welcomed with homemade lemonade, cold towels and more free wifi. The best part; you will be given a Six Senses canvas bag to put your shoes in for the duration of your stay as there will be no need for those. You are now on Island time which is one hour ahead of Male. Island time is not as you would expect as in other Asia/Pacific destinations. Your personal GEM (Guest Experience Maker) is always around to help with any query, activity you wish to book or amenity you need delivered to your villa at the drop of a hat.
Staying in a Laamu Water Villa with Pool on Jetty B we had the perfect spot right at the end of the jetty. Once we had explored the villa and taken a million photos for those stuck at work, we cheered our glasses of complimentary champagne while watching the sun set from our private pool. Whilst quite an open plan villa with an outdoor shower and bath that faced straight out to the water, there was plenty of privacy for honeymooners with wooden screens separating you from the next villa. Even across to Jetty A you would need binoculars to see anyone walking around on their private deck. Our GEM Shifu was amazing and was there to guide us throughout our stay. At some times, it seemed like she popped up here, there and everywhere to answer our questions and provide assistance. Who said the Maldives was for relaxing! Whilst you could sit on your villa deck and do nothing for the entire week, there were lots of activities like daily yoga and Tai Chi, water sports, a picnic on a private island, cinema under the stars, spa treatments; and snorkelling and scuba diving. The best part: having your own bicycle with personalised plates. These wooden plates are hand emblazoned with your initials and you are welcome to take these home with you, providing you can get it through customs in Australia.
The first night we were treated to a three course welcome dinner hosted by two of the resort managers. What a job they have, living on a stunning atoll 365 days of the year! Fresh, locally caught seafood was prominent on the menu with lobster, ceviche (raw fish marinated in citrus juices) and reef fish popular with the group. I rose the next morning before sunrise, not wanting to miss a moment of my time in paradise. The Go Pro took some amazing time lapse shots of the rising sun over Jetty A. After buffet breakfast at Longitude, a fully overwater restaurant with a glass floor to the water, we boarded ‘Sense of Privacy’, headed to our private island for a day of snorkelling and exploring. Our picnic, thoughtfully prepared by the resort staff, consisted of more seafood, prawns, reef fish, tuna and squid. A walk around the island, albeit a quick walk, and we were ready for snorkelling just off the beach. We could have snorkelled for hours in the crystal clear water and we did for over an hour. Being quite humid near the equator, the abundance of water is perfect for quick dip at any time of the day.
That night we were joined by Laura, the PR Manager, for cocktails at Chill Bar. Chill Bar is a white-themed deck bar with lounges and hammocks that overlook the water. Even from here you can step down the ladder into the water and snorkel. They often see turtles and manta rays from here during the day. Laamu Rocks No. 2 was the drink of choice with Arrack, a spirit distilled from coconuts, shaken with passionfruit, vanilla, and citrus to create the signature Six Senses cocktail. Dinner was served at Zen, the overwater Japanese restaurant, in which everyone shared fresh, raw fish, miso soup and sushi prepared in front of our eyes. Dessert was our choice of ice-cream from the forty plus flavours served at Ice downstairs. Some of the strange but delicious flavours on offer were lemongrass and yoghurt, black pepper and strawberry; and lime and coriander. Following dinner, we were delighted by a private screening of ‘Grease’ in the Cinema Under the Stars, complete with popcorn and loungers. What a fantastic way to cap off a lovely day in The Maldives!
It had been a long day, but I was determined to make the most of my three nights on this secluded atoll. It had been a distant dream of mine, and I am sure many others, to travel to the Maldives and stay in an overwater villa. As I fell asleep reflecting on a year of hard work, I thanked my lucky stars I was given this opportunity to really experience the destination. The million shades of blue did not disappoint with the sun at different times of the day affecting the colour like an all-blue rainbow.
